CHAPTER 11CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE WORKSorpti<strong>on</strong> of trace elements <strong>on</strong>to ir<strong>on</strong> <strong>oxide</strong> is an important process regulating c<strong>on</strong>taminantmobility <strong>and</strong> bioavailability in natural systems. The purpose of this research is tounderst<strong>and</strong> the effect of ir<strong>on</strong> <strong>oxide</strong>s, as discrete particles <strong>and</strong> coatings, <strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>taminant<str<strong>on</strong>g>adsorpti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong> develop surface complexati<strong>on</strong> models to predict heavy <str<strong>on</strong>g>metal</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>adsorpti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>and</strong> competiti<strong>on</strong>.A model system for soils <strong>and</strong> sediments, ir<strong>on</strong> <strong>oxide</strong>-<strong>coated</strong> <strong>silica</strong>, was synthesizedusing <str<strong>on</strong>g>adsorpti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong> precipitati<strong>on</strong> methods. The degree of coating was highly sensitiveto the particle size of <strong>silica</strong> <strong>and</strong> ranged between 0.59 <strong>and</strong> 21.36 mg Fe g -1 solid. Theinteracti<strong>on</strong> between goethite <strong>and</strong> <strong>silica</strong> potentially involves chemical forces. Ir<strong>on</strong> <strong>oxide</strong>coatings <strong>on</strong> the <strong>silica</strong> surface are n<strong>on</strong>-uniform increasing surface area <strong>and</strong> introducingsmall pores. The pHpzc of <strong>coated</strong> <strong>silica</strong> is between that of pure <strong>silica</strong> <strong>and</strong> ir<strong>on</strong> <strong>oxide</strong>suggesting both <strong>silica</strong> <strong>and</strong> goethite surfaces are important for <str<strong>on</strong>g>adsorpti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>. Ni <str<strong>on</strong>g>adsorpti<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong> the <strong>coated</strong> <strong>silica</strong> is greater than that for pure <strong>silica</strong> <strong>and</strong> the sub-micrometer goethitecoatings exhibit a larger capacity than discrete goethite impacting interacti<strong>on</strong>s at theaqueous interface.EXAFS analysis of Pb(II)-sorbed to freshly precipitated HFO suggest that Pb(II)i<strong>on</strong>s form m<strong>on</strong><strong>on</strong>uclear bidentate edge-sharing surface complexes <strong>on</strong> FeO6 octahedra. This mechanism appears to be invariant of pH, i<strong>on</strong>ic strength, Pb loading, <strong>and</strong> reacti<strong>on</strong>time. The internal sites <strong>on</strong> micropore walls appear to be no different than the external<strong>on</strong>es. Intraparticle surface diffusi<strong>on</strong> modeling described the two-step Pb/HFO sorpti<strong>on</strong>process reas<strong>on</strong>ably well. The rate-limiting diffusi<strong>on</strong> process may occur for decades156
