Function Inference for Unknown GenesOnce the pattern function has been confirmed from statistically enrichedontologies and mutants absent from the patterns, (or by statistically depletedontologies and mutants presents in the pattern), one can use that information toinfer functions for individual genes that remain unclassified. This is done byusing the information of present/absent mutants from the pattern display.Herein the focus will be on the cell wall patterns (pattern 11) and the ribosomalpattern (pattern 5) already analyzed in Subheading 3.3.3.1. For each explored pattern, a list of mutants is established having a significant contributionto the pattern or that are absent from the pattern.2. For pattern 11, the following mutants were found to be present: Gas1∆, Fks1∆,treatments with tunicamycin and glucosamine (known to disrupt cell wall); andErg2∆, She4∆, and YER044c∆ (linked to ergosterol biosynthesis, so indirectly tocell wall maintenance). A mutant knocked out an unknown ORF: YER083c.3. For pattern 5, the following mutants were found to be present: Rpll2a∆, Rpl27a∆,Rpl34a∆, Rpl6b∆, Rp18a∆, Rps24a∆, Rps24a∆ (haploid), and Rps27b∆. Mutantsknocking out unknown ORF have also been found (YOR078w∆, YMR269w∆, andYHR034c∆).4. For each pattern, for which the function has been determined, the pattern functioncan be attributed to the unknown ORFS in the pattern: for pattern 11, it is conjecturedthat the gene YER083c is linked to cell wall maintenance. For pattern 5, it isconjectured that the genes YOR078w∆, YMR269w∆, and YHR034c∆ are linkedto ribosomal functions.
