Despot’s Stefan LazarevicStefan is the finest looking ruler Serbia has ever had. Here is the portrait of Stefan given by Constantin thePhilosopher: «In waging wars, in struggles and artalike he was always ahead of others and guided themall. He was perfect in everything. In the beauty of hisbody as well as in his strenght Stefan stood amidst hispeers like the sun amidst the stars...» There is evidenceof great admiration Stefan’s looks and stature arousedin the citizens of Dubrovnik in 1422, and a similaraccount was given by a Hungarian trader, EberhartVendeke: «An exceptionally handsome man, honest, just and peaceloving».Stefan ruled at a time when the defeated Serbianstate bravely endured the vassalage of the smalland the poor to the big and the mighty, but withan honourable idea of saving whatever remainedto be saved and enabling his people, more throughdiplomacy than through fights and defiance, a moredignified and easier life. This is the reason why in ourhistory Stefan the Tall has never been regarded as avassal, in spite of his status and privileges, but becamethe symbol of a great martyr and valiant knightwho consciously accepted the vassalage and elevatedhimself on the cross into immortality.Stefan recognized the supreme authority of theTurkish sultan Bayazid until 1402, and participatedon his side in numerous, more or less famous, battles, gaining the reputation of a capable and brave soldierat Rovine, Nikopolis and Angora. The same yearStefan became independent and turned to Byzantiumwhich granted him with the title of despot. Severalyears later he strenghtened ties with Hungary andreceived Macva and Belgrade from King Sigismund. It was evident to his compatriots as well as to therulers of other countries - and future was to confirmit - that Serbia obtained a true statesman, the first ofthe kind after czar Dusan, who combined obedienceand skillful statesmanship and placed strong demandson others, stronger yet on himself.«The people’s leader bloomed like a flower andfell off» says Stefan’s biographer, Constantin thePhilosopher, upon Stefan’s sudden death in 1427,which befell him in hunting, on his horse, holding afalcon in his hand.
