KalemegdanAfter the Battle of Angora, Stefan Lazarevic was given the title ofdespot from the Byzantine Emperor and Belgrade to rule over from theHungarian King Sigismund. Thus, through diplomacy, Belgrade becamethe capital of the Serbian state for the first time in 1404. Despot Stefanundertook the restoration of the already existing fortification and builta fortrees, defensive walls and towers. Belgrade was divided into theUpper and Lower town. In the Upper town, Despot Stefan built a castle,fortified by walls with towers and trenches, with the entrance over adrawbridge. Inside the castle there was a court, Nebojsha’s and Bojsha’stowers, a library, houses of the nobility, a chapel, a treasury ...Duringthe reign of Despot Stefan Belgrade enjoyed both economic and culturalprosperity.
