learning, presentations, self –directed learning.<br />

Assessment: Tests, assignments one three hour paper internally moderated in June and<br />

MNS (4101, 4201) Credits: 32<br />

Purpose: Be able to identify abnormalities in midwifery and manage her baby during prenatal,<br />

intra-natal and post natal period.<br />

Content: Abnormalities during labour: Presentation, disordered uterine action, prolonged and<br />

obstructed labour, augmentation and induction of labour, complications of labour, management<br />

of medical conditions during pregnancy and labour, active management of 3rd stage of labour,<br />

and management of obstetric emergencies. Complications of the puerperium according to<br />

the national guidelines. Postpartum haemorrhage, subinvolution, puerperial sepsis, psychosis,<br />

breast infections, urinary and vaginal complications. Management of ARVs in pregnancy and<br />

delivery, ARVs in neonates. Pain relief in labour, Surgical and operative procedures Abnormalities<br />

of the neonate, termination of pregnancy, ethical legal and administrative aspects, genetic<br />

disorders –health education<br />

PHARMACOLOGY<br />

PRN (2101, 2201) Credits: 24<br />

Purpose: To introduce and guide prospective nurse practitioners in the safe and effective use<br />

of pharmaceutical agents<br />

Topics covered: Introduction, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, the autonomic nervous<br />

system; sympathetic NS, The autonomic NS; parasympathetic<br />

Antimicrobials: Antibiotics, anti TB drugs, anti fungals, antivirals. Anti-asthmatic drugs, drugs<br />

for hypertension. Drugs for treating heart failure, angina pectoris, myocardial infarct, anti<br />

coagulants, thrombolytic and anti platelet drugs. GI tract: PUD, diarrhoea/constipation, IV<br />

fluids, ORT. Gastroenteritis, cholera, typhoid, shigellosis, amoebic dysentery. Narcotic and<br />

non-narcotic analgesics; NSAIDs, RA, OA, gout. Epilepsy: anticonvulsants, febrile convulsions,<br />

meningitis. Antipsychotics, sedative-hypnotics, antidepressants. Diabetes: thyroid, adrenal<br />

and pituitary gland. Oral contraceptives, dysmenorrhoea, oxytocic agents. STIs, HIV/AIDS,<br />

PID; metronidazole.<br />
