UNIT MANAGEMENT<br />
NUM 3201: Credits 16<br />
Purpose: Management of care: To enable the learner to manage the human and material<br />
resources within a nursing unit, implementing appropriate policies, functioning within the<br />
ethical, legal and professional frameworks<br />
Content: Acts affecting health provision and care, management of a nursing unit, management<br />
systems, provision of optimum care to patients, evaluation of quality of nursing unit management,<br />
leadership, supervision, disaster management, clinical teaching, staff allocation, report writing,<br />
conflict management, budgeting, stock control,<br />
Instruction: Lectures, group discussions, role play, field-based learning experiences, problem<br />
based learning, case study analysis<br />
Assessment: Tests, assignments, one three hour paper internally moderated examination<br />
paper, in November.<br />
UNIT MANAGEMENT and ETHICS Credits: 16<br />
NUM 4201<br />
Purpose: To guide the students so that they will to recognize ethical theories and principles and<br />
how they apply to practice. That they develop skills in ethical decision making, bringing to bear<br />
critical thinking skills, and also develop an understanding of the nature of rights, responsibilities<br />
and obligations and how they operate within society and health care. Have ability to recognize<br />
and analyse ethical issues in nursing practice.<br />
Content: Content should address the philosophical and professional foundations of ethics.<br />
Include relevant ethical theories e.g major theories deontology and utilitarianism and<br />
applicable principles. Human rights and special groups and circumstances: the right to life,<br />
individuals seeking termination of pregnancy, the elderly and children’s rights, religious and sex<br />
orientations, substance abusers and HIV/AIDS sufferers are some of examples. Transcultural<br />
nursing. Cultural emphasis on informed consent and autonomy- NUREMBERG Code<br />
Instruction: Scenarios, problem-based learning, case studies, students experiences and how<br />
the issues came about and outcome, self directed learning, lectures.<br />
Assessment: Tests, assignments one three hour paper internally moderated examination<br />
paper, in November.<br />
