minors shall be permissible.(b) The Ph.D. major should carry atleast 20 Semester credits.(c) The group of course to be known as 'Minor' should carry 10 Semester credits and shouldnot be from the same field of study as the major.(d) In case of two 'Minors' the course requirement may go up to 40 credit hours instead of 30credit hours as prescribed in (a) above. If, however, both the 'Minors' are in closelyrelated fields, the course requirement in each minor shall be minimum of 8 Semestercredit hours.(e) The minimum requirement for thesis work for Ph.D. shall be 45 credit hours.(f) In the case of full time staff member registered for Ph.D. degree, the maximum creditspermissible in a semester would apply only to course work. No formal registration forthesis would be required, if the Advisory Committee certifies that the research carriedout by the candidate in the discharge of duties as member of the staff, had been used forthesis and the amount of work put in was equivalent to a minimum of 30 credit hours.Programme of Study6. (a) A detailed programme of studies giving the course requirement of the students admittedto the Master's or Ph.D. degree programme shall be prepared by the respective AdvisoryCommittee and submitted by the Advisors within first fifteen days of the second Semesterof the joining of the students through the Head of Department and Dean of the collegeconcerned to the Dean, college of PGS for his approval. The Dean, PGS shall issue theapproved programme of studies within one month of the receipt of the programme ofstudies by the Advisors after making such changes as he may deem necessary.(b) The programme of study shall be prepared out of the approved course and shall be sodevised as to ensure the inclusion of the core, major and basic supporting coursesprescribed.Making core courses of M.Sc. programme of a particular discipline compulsory at Ph.D.level for the students admitted from the related majors.(c) The students admitted to a Ph.D. degree in a discipline from the related area would berequired to study the core courses of the Master's degree of that discipline. This will beover and above the requirements of 30 credits.Courses7. (1) There shall be the following types of courses in each postgraduate major:(a) Core Courses:(i) Major: These shall consist of courses from the Department concerned which arecompulsory for a particular major.(ii) Supporting Courses: These courses shall consist of such basic supporting coursesfrom department, other than the major department, which shall also be invariablecomponents of each individual programme of study of <strong>Post</strong>graduate students takingup a particular major.(b) Open Electives: These shall consist of the courses both from the major Department and132
