newsST Electronics LaunchesAnimation StudioiVL Animation opened on 25 June 2007 in the presence of invitedguests from the digital media and animation communityST Electronics (Digital Media)[STEE-DM] celebrated the inaugurationof its animation studioon 25 June 2007. iVL Animationwas opened in the presence ofinvited guests from the digitalmedia and animation community.STEE-DM is the digital media andanimation arm of ST Electronics(Training & Simulation Systems).The ST Electronics Groupconstantly looks at opportunitiesto expand into new businesses,based on its core capabilities,so as to generate new revenuestreams. Digital media andanimation were evaluated as anattractive new business ventureto pursue as these are built uponthe same underlying competenciesas its simulation business, ie3D Computer Graphics, ArtificialIntelligence and Real-TimeProcessing.Today STEE-DM, with its iVLanimation studio, is a full-fledgeddigital media and animationplayer. It has produced the movieThe Ten Commandments which willair in the US in the later part ofDigital animation staff demonstrating their skills2007 and is nowin the midst ofproducing itssecond title, TheFuture is Wild.iVL animationis the first in aseries of studiosthat will be setup. In view of thegrowing demandfor a diverserange of digitalmedia solutions,STEE-DM will also venture intoother segments, like games andedutainment. This will allowdifferent studios to focus andspecialise in specific segments ofthe market.The Chairman of the MediaDevelopment Authority (MDA),Dr Tan Chin Nam, and Mr SeahMoon Ming, President of theST Electronics Group, jointlyopened the new studio. Mr ScottDyer, Executive VP of NelvanaStudios, was also present to lendhis support as STEE-DM’s keystrategic partner. Industry professionals,representing commercialand government agencies in thegames, animation and educationsectors were also present. Theguests were treated to a sneakpreview of part of Episode 1 ofThe Future is Wild. This will betelevised on Discovery Kids in theUS and Teletoon in Canada earlynext year.Dr Tan Chin Nam, Chairman of the MDA, and Mr Seah Moon Ming, Presidentof the ST Electronics Group, unveil the inauguration plaqueThe government’s support andefforts in promoting this field ofexpertise is vital in making thelocal digital media ecosystem asuccess and in turning Singaporeinto a Digital Media hub. Theneed to cultivate more talent inthe field of digital media is alsoimportant and ST Electronicshas taken steps to influence andhelp develop curriculum for thelocal polytechnics, particularlyTemasek Polytechnic, to ensurethat the growing demand foranimators will be met in the yearsto come. ST Electronics will alsobe offering scholarships in digitalmedia to educational institutions.With plans to develop five DVDsand theatrical releases withPromenade Pictures, three TVseries and ten DVDs with NelvanaStudios - STEE-DM has made astrategic move and gained a goodhead start in this journey.4 electronics review
newsSTEE-InfoSoft AwardedHDB RFID ProjectSTEE-InfoSoft will handle the necessary systemsintegration to ensure data integrity and smooth workflowin the supply chainThe Housing and DevelopmentBoard (HDB) of Singapore hasawarded ST Electronics (Info-Software Systems) [STEE-InfoSoft] a project to supply,check and distribute 250,000Radio Frequency Identification(RFID) tags to season parkingticket (SPT) users and 10 HDBbranch offices in the northernand eastern parts of Singapore.Mr Chang Yew Kong (centre), President of STEE-InfoSoftcongratulates project team members Mr Jeremy Quek andMs Tan Eng LuangSTEE-InfoSoft’s expertise as asystem integrator in providingcustomised applications andquality project management hasplaced it in a unique position tobe able to provide the HDB witha complete solution that will fullyutilise its experience in RFIDapplications for this project.STEE-InfoSoft will handle thenecessary systems integration toensure data integrity and smoothworkflow in the supply chain.Currently, SPT users need tovisit the HDB branch offices topurchase or renew the paper SPT.The RFID tags are embedded inthe new SPTs with an antennaand computer chip. Every chiphas a unique identificationnumber tied to the vehiclelicence plate number. Allrenewals can now be doneelectronically via GIRO orthrough the HDB website,thus eliminating the needto queue at the HDB branchoffices. Users can alsorenew via any AXS or SAMself-service kiosk.HDB parking enforcementofficers will also find theirjobs easier as they nowonly need to scan the RFID tagswith their handheld devicesinstead of visually looking at thepaper SPT.The new RFID season parkingsystem will also save HDBadministration overhead costswhich was necessary for theexisting paper-based system.In line with ST Electronics’Service Transformation mantra,STEE-InfoSoft has effectivelyhelped HDB to deliver betterservice to its customers andstakeholders.STEE-InfoSoft, together withST Electronics (Info-CommSystems), has previously deliveredthe Contact Track and Trace(CT&T) RFID tagging system forthe Ministry of Health back in2003 during the SARS epidemic.CT&T greatly alleviated theMinistry’s problem in contacttracing.
