SURVEY ENGINEERING
TECHNICIAN
“…the most challenging and most
satisfying accomplishment ”
by Bill Henderson
Survey Engineering Technician
Construction Co-ordinator, UMA Engineering Ltd.,
Regina, Saskatchewan
Getting my Survey Engineering
Technician diploma from Loyalist College
was the most challenging and most
satisfying accomplishment I have ever
experienced. After working as a Field
Engineer for over twenty years, there was
nothing I had not or could not build. I
needed a new challenge and that was to
move into a management position where
I could share my knowledge and vast
experience with other people. Having
never turned on a computer until I went to
Loyalist, I had my work cut out for me. I
had been a surveyor since I was eighteen
and I had no office experience at all.
Now I am the Construction Coordinator
for the biggest consulting engineering
company in Canada and I am in charge of
all of our surveying and inspection crews
in the City of Regina. I deal with all of our
clients and developers and also check
and file the reports for our Land
Development Department. I have been a
Safety Officer since 1984 and I was just
made the Regional Safety Monitor for our
company. I could not have gotten this
position without my diploma and training
in AutoCAD, computer applications and
technical communications.
I made a lot of friends at Loyalist and I
still talk to them when I can. Without their
support I would not have made it. We had
a lot of fun supporting each other when
one of us was having a bad day.
Why Choose Loyalist College
JOBS:
Our grads get jobs. In province-wide surveys, Loyalist College
consistently excels in graduate employment and graduate satisfaction.
In Graduate Employment, 93.9 per cent of Loyalist 2005-06
grads were employed within six months after graduation.
This result compares to 90.1 per cent across the province. In the
measure of Graduate Satisfaction, 82.2 per cent of Loyalist graduates
were satisfied or very satisfied.
“I was able to complete my program a week early because I was
offered a position with the Belleville Police Department. It was
exciting to know that there wouldn’t be any ‘pounding the pavement’
looking for a job following graduation – I already had one.”
Michael Ferreira
Police Foundations
“I had my Psychology degree from the University of P.E.I. but was
having problems finding work because I had no practical experience.
Within the first month of my placement in Loyalist’s Accelerated
Social Service Worker program, I was able to job out as I was offered
employment at the Prince Edward County Children’s Aid.The
professors worked with me so that I could complete my credits while
working full time. This combination worked really well for me.The
placement helped me get a job and I now have my diploma in
addition to my degree.”
Loyalist Students Present Research Findings to
Brighton Municipality
The Brighton Municipal Council was presented with the findings
and recommendations of two research projects conducted by Loyalist
students Kiel Martin, Civil Engineering Technology and Chantal
Elliott,Architectural Technology.“We gained an incredible amount of
knowledge from their efforts,” said Bruce Davis, Chief Administrative
Officer, Municipality of Brighton.“A scan of our municipal staff
reveals that seven of our 34 employees are Loyalist grads and four
others are graduates of other community colleges.A great testament to
community college education.”
Why Choose Loyalist College
HANDS-ON LEARNING:
Environment Technology student Abigail Morkem came to Loyalist after
completing her Biology degree at McMaster University.“I feel that the
college learning style is much more hands-on and the topics are directly
related to how you would use the skill in the workforce. At university,
the learning style seemed much more a matter of memorizing huge
quantities of information as well as learning general concepts and
theories. College definitely touches more on application learning. The
best part about my program is that you get the hands-on-training that
employers are looking for.We get to use laboratory instruments that
most colleges and universities don’t even have.”
CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
TECHNICIAN/TECHNOLOGY
“I decided to go back for the third year”
by Kelly Sedore
Chemical Engineering Technician,
Chemical Engineering Technology 2007
Chemical Technologist, Queen’s University, Dept. of Chemical
Engineering, Kingston, Ontario
Loyalist was a great place to get to my
education. After finishing the two-year
Chemical Engineering Technician
program, I decided to go back for the
third year of the program because of the
more specialized curriculum and potential
for increased job opportunities – and I am
glad I did. Class sizes were small and
provided lots of one-on-one instruction
with professors, and the skills I developed
in my third-year studies helped me
succeed in being hired as a Chemical
Technologist at Queen’s University.
My laboratory skills are vital to my job
since I’m involved with running the labs
for the undergraduates in the Chemical
Engineering Department and helping
graduate students with any questions
they have regarding chemicals,
equipment and other lab topics.
I have many fond memories about my
time at Loyalist - the interesting courses,
all the labs that we got to perform and the
awesome teaching staff. But my most
cherished memories would be of all the
great friends that I made over the past
three years and all the great times we had
both on and off campus. Best of all, we’re
still having great times together, even
though we’re not at Loyalist anymore. We
also have our personally decorated lab
coats and our end of the year shirts that
we all designed and signed to help us
remember the good old times.
“…consider a college that provides a
hands-on education”
by Chad Duff
Environmental Technology
Environmental Consultant, Quinte-Eco Consultants Inc.
Belleville, Ontario
I chose Loyalist because I was
impressed with the focus their
environmental program had on sciences.
I stayed for the three year program
because each and every course was
relevant to the field. The instructors in the
program are some of the brightest, most
dedicated people I have ever met. They
were an inspiration and I would not be
where I am today without their support
and guidance.
As an Environmental Consultant in a
small local firm, my responsibilities range
from report writing to contaminated site
remediation to sewer sampling. I need to
keep up to date on training, regulations,
and technologies to provide my clients
with the best service possible. Loyalist
did not teach me every skill I need to
know in my job - no college could, as
each job is different. But it was at Loyalist
that I learned how to challenge myself
and learn new skills.
I strongly recommend that if you are
interested in working in the environmental
field that you consider a college that
provides a hands-on education - Loyalist.
Why Choose Loyalist College
ATHLETICS:
Loyalist’s athletic programs provide opportunities for all
students to participate in a wide range of different sports -
intercollegiate competition, recreation, outdoor education
and instructional.
“The highlight of my two years of playing varsity basketball at Loyalist
was definitely during my first year when we came first in the Eastern
Region – but as a whole package, it’s been the people I’ve met, the
coaching staff, the road trips and the challenge of this level of
competition. Being part of the team definitely helped ease my transition
from high school to college. You get to meet students from all different
programs, not just as teammates, but those that come to the games to
cheer us on. I feel very honoured to receive the Male Athlete of the Year
award. It’s going to be hard to leave, but I’ll be back to participate in any
way that I can. Loyalist will continue to be part of who I am for many
years to come.”
“…I too embarked on a scholastic path”
by Nathalie Pye
Biotechnology Technology 2006, Biotechnology & Bio-food Technician
Laboratory Technologist, Bioniche Life Sciences, Belleville, Ontario
I am a 34 year old, single mother of a
beautiful eight year old boy. After the birth
of my son, I found that working at the
mall did not, and would not, provide a
stable lifestyle for either of us. When my
son started school, I too embarked on a
scholastic path and enrolled in full-time
studies at Loyalist College.
In May 2005, I graduated on the Dean’s
List with the Biotechnology Technician
and Bio-food Technician diplomas. I
decided to continue my studies in the fall
for the advanced diploma and in May
2006 graduated again on the Dean’s List
with a Biotechnology Technologist
Diploma. The week following graduation, I
was hired as a Haematology Technician
at MDS Laboratories in Belleville. This
position helped me to gain laboratory
experience while seeking a job more
suited to my biotechnology studies. I
achieved my career goal in January
when Bioniche Life Sciences hired me as
a Laboratory Technologist. I find my work
challenging, financially rewarding and
proof that focus and hard work really
does pay off in the long run.
Loyalist College also has transfer
agreements with many universities. I am
currently working towards my degree
part-time while I work in my field. Thank
by Kirsty Creamer
Chemical Engineering Technology
Process Engineer, Durez Canada, Fort Erie, Ontario
Graduating from Loyalist’s Chemical
Engineering Technology program was one
of my most fulfilling achievements. I
learned a great deal about the industry
from the faculty members who genuinely
love what they do.The hands-on experience
I gained as a student prepared me for the
workplace and gave me an advantage
over other applicants in the field.
I was hired even before I finished my
internship and now I’m in charge of
technical and process issues for our most
profitable unit. Every day I get to work at
a job I love and learn something new.
Although challenging, the broad subject
areas that are covered in the Chemical
program enable me to tackle any problem
that is thrown my way.
College years are truly the most
memorable years of your life. While it is
important to work hard, the social skills
you gain in college also add to the
experience and will assist you in future
said Mark Baechler, a graduate of
“I gained a solid foundation of
CHEF TRAINING
Culinary Skills – Chef Training
Cook, Bayview Retirement Residence, Belleville, Ontario
I took the Chef Training program to
sharpen my skills as a cook at the
Bayview Retirement Residence and to
open new doors of opportunity for me in
the future. I’m now much more confident
and adventurous with my cooking at work
- and the residents have really noticed
a difference!
When I look back at my year at
Loyalist, I still marvel at how smoothly it
went. I was working full time, going to
school full time and planning my wedding
that year. I thought I would be so stressed
out, but that simply was not the case.
Classes were hands-on and a lot of fun.
The teaching staff was very
accommodating and understanding about
my tight schedule.
I highly recommend the Chef Training
program. The course material is
interesting and fun and the teaching staff
truly wants you to succeed. I am very
happy with my Loyalist experience.
by Tenesa-Joy Gannon
Culinary Management
Pastry Chef, Delta Banff Royal Canadian Lodge, Banff, Alberta
I left Belleville the day after my
graduation from Culinary Management at
Loyalist College and headed out to a new
life in the Canadian Rockies. I was
sending out resumes, trying to figure out
where I was going to work. Pastry is my
true calling so when the Delta Banff
offered me a pastry chef position I
couldn’t pass it up.
I think the most rewarding aspect of
my job is the constant learning. Training
myself to be a pastry specialist holds me
“I never thought I would learn so much”
(self-employed)
Trenton, Ontario
When I decided to go to Loyalist and
take Culinary Management, I never
thought I would learn so much. I had
been cooking for a long time at home, but
the program helped me to improve my
skills and acquire many new ones. Now
that I am self-employed as a personal
chef, I am not afraid to tackle new
challenges because I know that I am
I’m doing and talking about. I have to
walk the walk. I like the fact that I have
free reign to create new dishes. I get to
do a lot of experimenting.
One of the most valuable skills that I
learned in school is the principle of
teamwork. It is important to be able to work
as part of a team even if you don’t initially
know all the people that you work with.
Further education will definitely be a
part of my future. In ten years I hope to
have attained my pastry chef papers and
be studying the art of chocolate.
prepared to face them.
I will always cherish my memories of
those early Friday mornings getting ready
for the on-campus bake sale and the
personal satisfaction I gained working
with the Loyalist Kid’s summer camp.
Attending Loyalist College acknowledged
and reinforced my love of cooking and
left me with life-long friendships.
BUSINESS SALES AND
“…the skills and confidence I needed for
a successful career”
by Courtney Cooper
Business Sales and Marketing
Key Accounts Manager, Canarm Ltd., Brockville, Ontario
Taking the Business Sales and
Marketing program gave me the key
skills and confidence I needed for a
successful career in sales and marketing.
I use just about every skill I acquired
while in the program in my everyday
work. The real-life roll-play simulations in
cold calling, communications, business to
business sales presentations, and
marketing courses helped prepare me
and also got me excited about my career.
Traveling and meeting new people is
the most interesting part of my job as a
Key Accounts Manager. I enjoy traveling
Loyalist’s Student Success Hub
across Canada promoting new products
and learning about different markets. I also
find it rewarding to walk into a customer’s
showroom and see that my hard work
has put our product in their business.
I have many fond memories of the time
I spent with friends, both in residence and
on campus. I moved to Belleville from out
of town and found that living in residence
gave me an immediate group of friends.
The small classroom sizes create a
unique learning atmosphere and allow
you to make good friends within your
classroom as well.
Loyalist’s Student Success Hub is a centralized approach to providing
students need help, or are unsure of the services available to them, the
Why Choose
Loyalist College
IT’S ALL
ABOUT YOU:
“The school atmosphere at
Loyalist is really unique. It’s nice
to walk down the hall and see
familiar faces. The small
classroom sizes allow you to
interact with your professors and
classmates. It also makes it
possible to get assistance and
share ideas freely.
Courtney Cooper,
Business Sales and Marketing
“It seemed a little hectic my first
day when I moved into residence
but I soon got to know my
roommates — after that you start
connecting with other groups
and it just grows from there. I
came from a very small school
and would have been
overwhelmed going to a huge
campus in a huge city. Loyalist’s
Chef Training program has an
excellent reputation and I’ve
always been drawn to hands-on
learning, it’s a much better way
for me to learn that sitting in
lecture theatres. Everyone has
been so friendly.”
Korin Howes, Chef Training
“I’m the first one in my family to
leave home so this was very hard
for all of us,” explained Jennifer
Bannag, a first-year
Biotechnology student from
Vaughan, north of Toronto.“I
discovered my program on the
website and just thought it
sounded so interesting.The work
placements will be such good
experience and the range of job
opportunities is huge —
forensics, water treatment and
food quality control are just a
few. That’s why I’m here, to learn
the skills that will enable me to
get a good job that I enjoy.”
ACCOUNTING AND
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
“I was offered a job before I graduated.”
by Nancy File
Accounting and Business Administration
Student Government Office Manager,
Loyalist College, Belleville, Ontario
A couple of months before my
graduation from Business Administration,
I was offered a full-time position as the
Office Manager for the Student
Government at Loyalist College. I did my
placement within that department
because I had already accepted the fulltime
job. I was well prepared for the
workforce due to the many opportunities to
apply what I had learned in my classes to
the real world. Some of those opportunities
included working part-time as a
receptionist and being involved with the
community through special class projects.
During my second year of the Business
Administration program, I decided to work
towards a double diploma in Accounting. I
signed up for Continuing Education so that
I could do my Accounting courses online.
This made it easier to balance classes, a
part-time job, etc. and I was also able to
complete my Accounting projects at my
own pace. Balancing everything that I had
on the go definitely helped improved my
time management skills.
What I found to be most valuable was
the chance to improve my communication
skills in the Business Administration
program. Before Loyalist College, I was
extremely quiet but that changed with
class presentations and community
projects. Now as the Office Manager, I am
confidently interacting with staff, students,
suppliers and visitors to the office.
Helping to organize events and activities
for students is immensely rewarding. Their
positive reactions allow me to see the
results of my work. I also find it satisfying
to assist students with their inquiries and
concerns. I enjoy working with and
helping students who are members of the
Student Government to achieve their
goals on the Board of Directors.
I think that the Business Administration
program offers great opportunities for
students. There are so many different
aspects to working in the world of
business so chances are good that you
will find an area that sparks your interest.
Business Students to Partner with Business
Community
Four Loyalist Business Administration students received a positive
response from their presentation to the Belleville Economic
Development Committee.Their idea was to take the skills they were
learning in their program and offer their assistance to the City of
Belleville in helping to meet the business needs of the community.
BUSINESS
ADMINISTRATION
“One of the best decisions I have
ever made”
by Matt Richardson
Business Administration
Education Assistant, Quinte Health Care – Education Services
Belleville, Ontario
Immediately after my graduation I was
asked by a prominent member of our
community how much of my skill and
ability were “me” and how much were
taught to me at Loyalist College. My
answer was that although my work ethic
and out-going personality were always a
part of who I was, my pre-Loyalist skills
were raw and unpolished and that the
Business Administration program helped
me tap into my potential. The program
also equipped me with many skills that
are in high demand with organizations
from all sectors. I gathered a vast array of
both hard and soft business skills from the
classroom environment and was given the
opportunity to reinforce this knowledge by
working with highly respected
organizations within our community.
Today, my position as Education
Assistant at Quinte Health Care is always
interesting and can take me from patient
care areas to finance, to focus groups
and committee meetings all in one day.
I have been fortunate to have been
involved in some major projects so early
in my career. My roles have included codevelopment
of complex business cases,
critical pathing, revamping of our entire
corporate orientation program and many
presentations with attendees ranging from
senior management, community members,
clinical professionals and many others.
Another part of my career that I enjoy a
great deal is teaching. Currently I cover a
large portion of our corporate orientation
topics ranging from hospital codes,
disaster and emergency preparedness,
HR functions, privacy and confidentiality
and many more. This past winter I was
tasked with traveling between our four
hospitals to teach emergency preparedness
and have been asked to teach more
hospital code procedures this fall.
I have so many great memories of my
time at Loyalist. I met my fiancé and most
of my wedding party at the College. I also
have fond memories of working on
campus at the SAL Lab and CAL Center.
Both of these jobs bolstered my resume
and gave me many skills that I use on a
daily basis.
To those students considering the
Business Administration Program, I
encourage you to take your academics
seriously, but do not stop there. Reinforce
your classroom learning with volunteer
and project experience. It is a competitive
industry - differentiate yourself from the
rest of the pack. Do the little extras.
Three Consecutive Years of 100 Percent Success
for Loyalist Paramedic Grads
Paramedic graduates from the Loyalist College Bancroft Campus
were 100 percent successful in the Advanced Emergency Medical
Care Assistant examinations for the third consecutive year.“The
instructors in our program had us well prepared for the provincial
examination,” stated paramedic Sean Cavanagh. “Being a
graduate of Loyalist’s program was a definite advantage when
looking for employment. Paramedic services think very highly of
Loyalist graduates.”
“The Loyalist Paramedic program has a strong reputation for
excellence,” said George Burton,Vice-President Enrolment
Management and Student Services.“In addition to these excellent
examination results, they have also showcased their exceptional
practical skills by placing in the top two teams for the past five
consecutive years at the annual Skills Competition sponsored by
the Durham Paramedic Association in Oshawa. To compete against
working paramedic professionals, as well as students from other
programs, and repeatedly bring home top honours is a definite
testament to their skill level.”
“It is a fantastic career”
by Lorraine Downey
Paramedic
Paramedic, Ottawa Paramedic Service, Lanark Ambulance Service
Ottawa and Lanark, Ontario
My time at Loyalist - Bancroft Campus
was a welcome change from my
university experience. The region is a
peaceful location for this high pressure
and demanding program. The folks are
friendly, and while the driving to and from
the campus can be challenging, the
scenery is gorgeous all four seasons. My
class was very small compared to
university standards and I made great
friends from across Ontario.
The part-time program at Loyalist was
my best option even though I was accepted
to other full-time programs. Loyalist had
the only Paramedic program where I
could balance part-time employment,
family and child commitments and parttime
schooling for 2 years.
I truly enjoy the daily variety built into
paramedicine and the satisfaction
garnered from helping people. My most
valuable learning experiences were not
the academic kind, but practical hands-on
“tidbits” passed on to us from our
instructors - all experienced medics.
Their wisdom was invaluable and I believe
it is one of the program’s greatest assets.
For those interested in a career in
paramedicine, I would recommend
thoroughly investigating the job in
advance. It is one area of study that
requires strong academic skills, excellent
physical condition and excellent people
skills. It is a fantastic career for those who
enjoy a job that brings different challenges
and surprises each and every shift.
After graduating I secured a full-time
position with Ottawa Paramedic Service
and a casual position with Lanark
Ambulance Service. Working both
services provides a pleasant balance
between city and rural paramedicine.
PRACTICAL
NURSING
“…it is exciting to begin a new chapter
in your life.”
by Tenique Ramsay
Practical Nursing
Registered Practical Nurse,
Trent Valley Lodge Nursing Home,
Hastings Manor, Belleville, Ontario
I had been on a waiting list for the
Practical Nursing Diploma program for a
long time in Nova Scotia, so you can
imagine my excitement when I was
accepted to Loyalist College so quickly! I
packed up my little car with all I could
carry and drove out to Belleville with
much anticipation to begin my two-year
adventure in the Practical Nursing Program.
That was in 2004 and it’s hard to believe
that I’ve graduated and have now been
working in the Belleville area as a
Registered Practical Nurse for over a year!
Just as any preschooler on their first
day of school, it is exciting to begin a new
chapter in your life. The staff at Loyalist
College - everyone from professors to
cafeteria staff and janitors - is more than
willing to help you in a friendly manner.
Whether you are unable to find your
assigned room or just need to know
where the closest washroom is, everyone
is glad to help.
Loyalist may be a small college
compared to others, but it definitely is not
lacking anything because of its size.
There is something for everyone and they
are dedicated to giving you the best
possible education in your chosen field.
The professors are knowledgeable and
passionate about what they are teaching.
I never once went home after a day of
classes and thought that was a waste of
time. As a matter of fact, I made sure not
to miss any days because I knew that
there would be something interesting and
important to learn. The nursing lab at
Loyalist College is state-of-the-art and
fortified our classroom learning into reallife
situations. I was never afraid to ask
for clarification - there was no such thing
as a silly question.
Of course there were times when I felt
overwhelmed with a project or a test that
was coming up, but by keeping my sights
focused on the overall goal of completing
the program, I always got through it and
onto the next challenge. However, there
are numerous support services available to
aide you if you feel you are lagging behind.
I was fortunate to find work as a
Health Care Aide-equivalent in health care
settings while attending College. This
experience strengthened my nursing
skills. Once I graduated, my employer
changed my title from Health Care Aide,
to Registered Practical Nurse! I have
since added a second nursing job to my
resume and feel so satisfied with my
work. The skills I developed at Loyalist
College are enforced everyday. I am
proud to be a Loyalist College Alumnae.
Loyalist Practical Nurses Achieve 100% Success in
Registration Examinations
Loyalist College Practical Nursing graduates of 2007 have received
notification that all 24 members of the class were successful in their
registration examination. Each of these graduates ranked at or above
the provincial average in all areas assessed. This qualifies them to
work as a Registered Practical Nurse in Ontario.
“This is the second consecutive year that graduates of the Practical
Nursing program have achieved a 100% success rate on the
registration examination,” said Karen Brooks-Cathcart, Dean of
Health and Human Studies.“In addition to congratulating the
graduates on their success, I want to acknowledge the commitment of
faculty and staff to providing a very high quality program. They have
all worked extremely hard to achieve this success.”
“My success in writing the examination is definitely a reflection of
how well the faculty prepared us for it,” said Sarah Freymond.
“Loyalist was a great learning environment that was extremely
supportive. In the classroom it was always evident that the professors
were teaching from their experience, and this definitely strengthened
the program. My favourite part of the Practical Nursing program was
having the opportunity to take the knowledge that I had learned in
class and apply it in a clinical setting. I am now employed at Quinte
Healthcare in North Hastings where I grew up. I’m doing what I
always dreamed of doing.”
SOCIAL SERVICE
WORKER
“…I wasn’t alone in my pursuit to build a
better life.”
by Sandi LeBlanc-DiCresce
Social Service Worker
Mental Health Counsellor,
Mental Health Services Hastings and Prince Edward Corp.,
Belleville, Ontario
Interviewing and Counselling proved to
be one of my most challenging courses
and yet there is no doubt that each of
these skills is absolutely essential in my
current role as a Mental Health
Counsellor. Receiving so much support
and encouragement from both Lynda
Carr-Mulholland and Michael Manthorpe
helped me to realize that some of my
personal traits I had previously viewed as
limitations can actually work to open
doors with clients who appreciate a
subdued, gentler approach in a
counselling relationship.
Each day is unique in my job and it’s
the people I work with, both co-workers
and clients, who make what I do so
rewarding. It goes without saying that this
job can be extremely stressful at times
and yet I can’t think of a more therapeutic
environment to work in overall.
As a mom with a young child, the
thought of returning to school after
having been out of university for eight
years was really intimidating. Despite
this, the camaraderie I soon found with
my fellow accelerated SSW students
reminded me that I wasn’t alone in my
pursuit to build a better life. Before long I
began to look forward to going to school
everyday, even when I hadn’t slept much
the night before (staying up late to do
homework after finally getting my 2 year
old to sleep), and I realized this was a
sure sign that things were looking up
for me.
While many of us would agree that we
need more resources in the Social
Service field, the truth of the matter is
that there are only so many jobs to go
around. With this in mind, make your time
at Loyalist count and know that this is
your opportunity to stand out as the type
of individual employers desire to find. The
SSW faculty will do their best to guide
and support you as you learn and grow so
don’t hesitate to share your goals and
enthusiasm with them. Above all, never
underestimate the value of networking in
this field.
My entire Loyalist experience was
memorable, as were the people who kept
me company along the way.
RECREATION AND
LEISURE SERVICES
“I liked what I was doing, and that made
all the difference.”
by Michael Popiel
Recreation and Leisure Services
Co-ordinator for After School Programs and Summer Camps,
City of Ottawa, Ottawa, Ontario
When I graduated from high school, my
marks were inconsistent from class to
class. I never did well in classes I was not
interested in. But, when I came to
Loyalist, that all changed because I was
interested in the Recreation and Leisure
Services program. Although my study
habits did not change from high school, I
liked what I was doing, and that made all
the difference. I had to work hard to do as
well as I did, but I also had lots of time to
have fun on and off campus, meeting
new people and making new friends.
I apply everything I learned at Loyalist
to my job as a Coordinator for After
School Programs and Summer Camps
with the City of Ottawa. Whether it is
planning or running the program, I know
exactly what I am supposed to be doing. I
owe a lot to my professors who were very
knowledgeable and willing to share their
wealth of experience in the field.
The Recreation and Leisure Services
program is demanding and requires a
commitment of time and effort. But once
you get that diploma, the employment
possibilities are endless.
CORPORATE AND
COMMERCIAL SECURITY
“It was absolutely worthwhile.”
by Tammy Staffen
Corporate and Commercial Security
Smoke-Free Ontario Enforcement Officer, Hastings & Prince Edward
Counties Health Unit, Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention Dept.,
Belleville, Ontario
The Corporate and Commercial
Security program at Loyalist College
provided the foundation necessary to find
the perfect job for me. Being a mature
student and mother, Loyalist taught me
the essentials of security, investigations
and communications without all the
“filler” subjects that take up the first one
or two years at other colleges and
universities. The fast track program
allowed me to finish my first year in six
months which caught me up to the
second-year students.
After completing a placement with
Hastings & Prince Edward Counties
Health Unit, I knew that enforcement was
my calling. The faculty at Loyalist worked
with me each and every step to ensure
that I would be prepared to meet and
exceed the expectations of any employer
who hired me. My job as a Smoke-Free
Ontario Enforcement Officer is never
boring. Enforcement is something I have
always had an interest in and doing it
every day is a very rewarding experience.
The field of enforcement and security is
growing rapidly. The studies are intense
and often very difficult, but the professors
are always willing to give that extra help
to get you through. Each professor has
first-hand life experience in the field they
teach. My law teacher was a lawyer and
my security teacher was an RCMP Officer,
so their accounts were real and made
learning much more interesting.
Loyalist has provided a wonderful
mirage of memories for me. I loved to
come home each day and share my
school news with my children. They loved
to hear about my friends and help with
my homework. At Loyalist I met friends
that I still keep in touch with, and each
time I meet my professors they are
genuinely concerned about how I am
doing. Loyalist is a small college with a
deep reputation for caring for their
students well after graduation.
COMMUNITYAND JUSTICE
SERVICES WORKER
“I am excited to go to work every day”
by Korinne Dale
Correctional Worker (now Community and Justice Services Worker)
Direct Care Worker, St. Lawrence Youth Association
Kingston, Ontario
Returning to school after 15 years in
the job force and raising a family was the
most frightening yet exciting decision I
had ever made. The first day of school
was just like the first day of kindergarten;
I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in; I wouldn’t
make friends because I was much older
and that the workload would prove to be
too much of a challenge. I couldn’t have
been more wrong. Loyalist students are
diverse in every way including age and
background. Loyalist teachers offered a
variety of experience both in and out of
the classroom. They nurtured my
confidence until I was sure I could
succeed.
The Correctional Worker program
offered the opportunity to demonstrate
the skills I’d learned in my two field
placements. I was hired by the youth
facility in which I completed my second
placement and was working before
graduation. I draw on my Loyalist College
experience everyday and am grateful for
the knowledge I gleaned from my
teachers. I am excited to go to work
every day and for the first time in my life,
I feel that I am making a difference.
Why Choose
Loyalist College
AMAZING
FACULTY:
“Without a doubt, my favourite
part of the program is the
faculty – they really make the
program. Down-to-earth and
easy to approach, they make it
fun, yet give it to you straight,
always pushing you forward.
The program is tied closely to
the industry, giving us exposure
to professionals working in the
field who critique our work and
offer objective suggestions for
improvement.”
Vance Lester
“The instructors I had were all
very knowledgeable and
passionate about their trades.
That made it easier to absorb the
content because the environment
was open and energetic.
I strongly recommend the
Mechanical Techniques program
to anyone looking to get into
the trades. I feel it is ‘the course’
to get you started in the trades!”
Casey Ruttan
“I strongly believe that having
teachers who had worked in the
manufacturing sector themselves
really offered a different, yet very
positive kind of teaching.”
The most interesting aspect of my job
as a Customs and Immigration Officer is
the daily contact with people from all
around the world and from all walks of
life. I also find it rewarding when I
intercept contraband from entering the
There are so many opportunities in the
ever expanding world of Customs and
developed through the program coupled
with on-the-job placements will open
many doors for Loyalist graduates.
I will always remember those early
“no doubt in my mind what college I was
by Samantha Clark
Police Foundations
Security Guard, Frontier Security Services, Trenton, Ontario
I have lived in the Belleville area since I
was young. When it came time for me to
choose a college and program of study, I
found out there are many to choose from.
However, when I decided on the Police
Foundations program, there was absolutely
no doubt in my mind what college I was
going to choose – Loyalist. Loyalist is
highly regarded when it comes to the
Police Foundations program because of its
four communications courses, four fitness
courses and two, four-week placements.
The professors have real-life police
experience. They are honest, tough when
they need to be and will push you harder
if they know you have the potential. For
the reasons listed above, I would not have
chosen any other college.
If you are serious about a policing
career and you want as much knowledge,
experience and training as you will need
to begin the police officer process,
choose Loyalist College. The professors
and resources are there to help you the
whole way to graduation . . . and after.
Forecast for Careers in Policing Looks Promising
“We are a large organization and we’re hiring. We’re into an
increased cycle of hiring because of attrition and we need to hire
about 300 new officers this year. That need will continue from
year to year.”
“from guidance to finances – the
help was there”
by Matthew Cormier
Advertising
Account Co-ordinator, MacLaren McCann, Toronto, Ontario
From the moment I set foot on the
Loyalist Campus, I was at home. There
was not a single person that wasn’t
willing and ready to help with anything I
needed - from guidance to finances - the
help was there.
I was fortunate to begin my fast-paced
career at MacLaren McCann/CSG with
General Motors Canada as my client. I am
challenged daily with a variety of tasks
and projects, each one as unique as the
next. This position is highly rewarding in
many ways both socially and
professionally. With the ever-evolving
industry constantly picking up pace, the
challenge of tight time lines, heavy
project loads and fast-paced industry
keeps me on my toes. It is a great feeling
to work on a team that is constantly
striving to stay ahead of the game and
ultimately sell more of our client’s
products.
My fondest memories of my time at
Loyalist would have to be the people first
and foremost, and that includes program
faculty members, Student Government,
Board of Governors and all of the great
staff who helped me along the way. I was
very involved in Student Government and
Board of Governors, a move that I would
highly recommend to anyone. There are
so many reasons why this experience
was great but simply put, you meet
people, work with bands and
entertainment, and you learn skills in
addition to your day-to-day classes.
Loyalist became a home to me over my
four years and was truly the best foundation
for a successful career in the advertising
and integrated marketing industry.
“It was absolutely worthwhile.”
by Amanda Bobbitt
Print Journalism
Production Co-ordinator/Proofreader, Essence Publishing & The Shield
Belleville, Ontario
I’ll always remember the community at
Loyalist, which was small and welcoming,
and all the crazy hours spent working
with fellow students putting out our
weekly newspaper The Pioneer. The hectic
schedule and tight deadlines created lots
of stress – but it was absolutely
worthwhile. I credit the program’s handson
experience and class work for the
development of the skills I use today.
The opportunity to experience the many
facets of Print Journalism resulted in a
change in my career goal. I discovered
that I no longer wanted to be a reporter
but could take what I liked best about the
program - design, editing and production
- and create a job. I was hired at Shield
Media a few short months after
graduation. In my role as Production
Co-ordinator and Proofreader, I get to
experience what I consider to be the best
parts of the publishing and newspaper
industry - holding a book right off the
press and helping deliver the news to our
city, all the while knowing the time and
effort it took to get there.
“One of the best decisions I have
ever made”
by Teresa Burd
Broadcast Journalism
Summer Events Reporter,
Corus Entertainment-
Cornwall, Ontario
One of the best decisions I have ever
made was to study Broadcast Journalism
at Loyalist College. When I started College
at the age of seventeen, I was unsure if
this was the right program for me. At first
I thought I had made the wrong choice,
but the program opened up so many
doors for me. You don’t have to get a job
in news after you graduate. There are a
wide variety of opportunities available.
The Broadcast Journalism staff are the
greatest. They are very honest with you.
The first day of school the teachers told us
it would not be easy. They were absolutely
right, but they were there for us anytime
we needed them. I struggled through parts
of the program but my teachers
encouraged me to strive harder and I have
them to thank for much of my success.
My experiences at Loyalist were
amazing. I met friends I will have for the
rest of my life, and I learned that I CAN do
whatever I put my mind to. This
specifically shows in my work now. I’m a
Summer Events Reporter at Variety 104.5
and I love my job. Every day I learn
something new, and meet someone new.
It is the most challenging job I have ever
had, but also the most rewarding. I grow
more and more each day.
Everywhere I go in the media industry I
meet Loyalist grads. Loyalist is a top
competitor in the media industry and they
should be proud of that. I’m proud to put
Loyalist on my resume because it has
helped me shape what I am today. I
would tell anyone who is considering the
Broadcast Journalism program at Loyalist
to make sure they are ready to learn, to
put in extra hours, and to work as hard as
you possibly can. Your dream job awaits
you at the end of it all.
National Recognition for Loyalist Photojournalists
PUBLIC
RELATIONS
“definitely the right choice for me”
by Catherine Holt
Public Relations
Fundraising Assistant, Campbellford Memorial Hospital Foundation
Campbellford, Ontario
The Public Relations post-graduate
program was definitely the right choice
for me. The training in media relations,
key messaging, fundraising (i.e. donor
relations) and event management has all
been very valuable in my job with a
hospital foundation.
As a fundraiser, donor relations are a
core responsibility and one of the best
parts of my job. The instruction in this
area, along with the advice we received
from career professionals, really helped
me to decide what field of work I wanted
to pursue. Much of the program is
focused on relationship building which
has a huge impact on any career in
public relations.
I loved Loyalist because its size really
promoted a feeling of belonging. The
professors are highly educated and
experienced in their fields of expertise,
and this translates down to the students.
Loyalist has a great atmosphere and the
PR program is fun from start to finish. This
really encourages the learning process.
My advice to anyone considering the
PR program is GO FOR IT! If you love
people, want to have fun in your job, are
looking for more than one avenue of
employment and are brave enough to put
yourself out there, then the Public
Relations program is for you. It opened up
a new world for me and my fellow
graduates. It will for you too.
Loyalist Public Relations Students Host Workshop
Series for Community
Students of the Loyalist College post-graduate Public Relations program
hosted a series of eight media relations workshops for members of the
community. “The Community Media Workshop Series will provide an
excellent opportunity for our post-grad Public Relations students to share
their knowledge in a real-world setting,” said Professor Kerry Ramsay.
TELEVISION AND NEW
MEDIA PRODUCTION
“Loyalist gave me the foundation
I needed”
by Cat Nolte
Television and New Media Production
Executive Assistant/Office Manager
Sons and Daughter Production Inc., Toronto, Ontario
Loyalist gave me the foundation I
needed to work in this industry. The
internship program was what actually
gave me my break with an amazing
commercial production company. I did my
two-month internship at Partners Film
Company during my third year and they
hired me three weeks into my internship
as a staff Production Assistant. I made
many contacts at that job and have now
moved on to a new production company
called Sons and Daughters
(www.sonsanddaughters.ca), where I am
the Executive Assistant/Office Manager.
I’m gaining a great deal of experience
here and I truly love my job, which is
really important.
I feel the greatest strength of Loyalist’s
Television and New Media Production
program is the hands-on experience and
the professors who have all worked in
the industry.
Loyalist Professor Named Canadian New Media
Educator of the Year
Robert Washburn, Journalism Professor at Loyalist College was
honoured with the Canadian New Media Educator of the Year
award. Professor Washburn was the first Canadian educator to bring
students into a social networking simulation classroom in the virtual
world of Second Life, using this environment as an education tool.
perfect for learning all aspects of the
electrical trade. I’m working with singlephase
and three-phase power, PLCs and
a wide variety of electrical equipment.
The apprenticeship program in Alberta is
four years of hands-on learning. As
someone entering the electrical field,
work experience at Lakeside Packers is
extremely valuable. With this experience
contractors and other companies will
literally fight to have you on their staff.”
Employer’s comments…
Electrical Superintendent
Lakeside Packers,
Brooks, Alberta
“Kelly has been a great addition to my department. He has learned many
of the control systems here and continues to learn more every day. The
electrical background that he learned at Loyalist has benefited him a great
deal. He knew how to troubleshoot schematics and wiring diagrams
efficiently and can now basically repair almost anything we have here. He’s
furthering his training by going through the apprenticeship program, working
toward becoming a journeyman electrician. Kelly has a great work ethic.
He’s a hard worker and a very intelligent electrician. With the apprenticeship
training he’s completing now he will be an awesome electrician and a
benefit to any company. I wish we had more like him at Lakeside.”
I had come to the realization that I
dropped out of high school and after five
years knew that I needed to get an
education and find a career. I chose
its strong manufacturing sector and I
wanted to immerse myself in that
environment. My professor, John Poste,
encouraged me and showed me I was
capable of successfully completing not
only my Mechanical Techniques
Manufacturing Engineering. This opened
up a whole new world to me. Following
graduation, the first resume I handed out
resulted in a job as a CNC Machinist at
The Ottawa Hospital. Attending Loyalist
LAUNCH:
“There is a definite shortage of
skilled trades people which will
continue to increase as many current
workers are close to retirement age.
The trades have been neglected and
now industry knows that they need
roles.This gives me the perfect
opportunity to advance my career.
Linamar, the company I work for, has
Guelph, another in Batawa, and also
an overseas plant.There are many
opportunities for advancement right
within this company – not to
mention those throughout the
industry. I want to travel and see
places that I’ve never seen. I can’t
think of a better way than to have a
job that I enjoy that takes me there.
The opportunities are there. I plan to
take advantage of them.”
