Returning to school after 15 years in
the job force and raising a family was the
most frightening yet exciting decision I
had ever made. The first day of school
was just like the first day of kindergarten;
I was afraid I wouldn’t fit in; I wouldn’t
make friends because I was much older
and that the workload would prove to be
too much of a challenge. I couldn’t have
been more wrong. Loyalist students are
diverse in every way including age and
background. Loyalist teachers offered a
variety of experience both in and out of
the classroom. They nurtured my
confidence until I was sure I could
succeed.
The Correctional Worker program
offered the opportunity to demonstrate
the skills I’d learned in my two field
placements. I was hired by the youth
facility in which I completed my second
placement and was working before
graduation. I draw on my Loyalist College
experience everyday and am grateful for
the knowledge I gleaned from my
teachers. I am excited to go to work
every day and for the first time in my life,
I feel that I am making a difference.
