My time at Loyalist - Bancroft Campus
was a welcome change from my
university experience. The region is a
peaceful location for this high pressure
and demanding program. The folks are
friendly, and while the driving to and from
the campus can be challenging, the
scenery is gorgeous all four seasons. My
class was very small compared to
university standards and I made great
friends from across Ontario.
The part-time program at Loyalist was
my best option even though I was accepted
to other full-time programs. Loyalist had
the only Paramedic program where I
could balance part-time employment,
family and child commitments and parttime
schooling for 2 years.
I truly enjoy the daily variety built into
paramedicine and the satisfaction
garnered from helping people. My most
valuable learning experiences were not
the academic kind, but practical hands-on
“tidbits” passed on to us from our
instructors - all experienced medics.
Their wisdom was invaluable and I believe
it is one of the program’s greatest assets.
For those interested in a career in
paramedicine, I would recommend
thoroughly investigating the job in
advance. It is one area of study that
requires strong academic skills, excellent
physical condition and excellent people
skills. It is a fantastic career for those who
enjoy a job that brings different challenges
and surprises each and every shift.
After graduating I secured a full-time
position with Ottawa Paramedic Service
and a casual position with Lanark
Ambulance Service. Working both
services provides a pleasant balance
between city and rural paramedicine.
