Interviewing and Counselling proved to
be one of my most challenging courses
and yet there is no doubt that each of
these skills is absolutely essential in my
current role as a Mental Health
Counsellor. Receiving so much support
and encouragement from both Lynda
Carr-Mulholland and Michael Manthorpe
helped me to realize that some of my
personal traits I had previously viewed as
limitations can actually work to open
doors with clients who appreciate a
subdued, gentler approach in a
counselling relationship.
Each day is unique in my job and it’s
the people I work with, both co-workers
and clients, who make what I do so
rewarding. It goes without saying that this
job can be extremely stressful at times
and yet I can’t think of a more therapeutic
environment to work in overall.
As a mom with a young child, the
thought of returning to school after
having been out of university for eight
years was really intimidating. Despite
this, the camaraderie I soon found with
my fellow accelerated SSW students
reminded me that I wasn’t alone in my
pursuit to build a better life. Before long I
began to look forward to going to school
everyday, even when I hadn’t slept much
the night before (staying up late to do
homework after finally getting my 2 year
old to sleep), and I realized this was a
sure sign that things were looking up
for me.
While many of us would agree that we
need more resources in the Social
Service field, the truth of the matter is
that there are only so many jobs to go
around. With this in mind, make your time
at Loyalist count and know that this is
your opportunity to stand out as the type
of individual employers desire to find. The
SSW faculty will do their best to guide
and support you as you learn and grow so
don’t hesitate to share your goals and
enthusiasm with them. Above all, never
underestimate the value of networking in
this field.
My entire Loyalist experience was
memorable, as were the people who kept
me company along the way.
