I’ll always remember the community at
Loyalist, which was small and welcoming,
and all the crazy hours spent working
with fellow students putting out our
weekly newspaper The Pioneer. The hectic
schedule and tight deadlines created lots
of stress – but it was absolutely
worthwhile. I credit the program’s handson
experience and class work for the
development of the skills I use today.
The opportunity to experience the many
facets of Print Journalism resulted in a
change in my career goal. I discovered
that I no longer wanted to be a reporter
but could take what I liked best about the
program - design, editing and production
- and create a job. I was hired at Shield
Media a few short months after
graduation. In my role as Production
Co-ordinator and Proofreader, I get to
experience what I consider to be the best
parts of the publishing and newspaper
industry - holding a book right off the
press and helping deliver the news to our
city, all the while knowing the time and
effort it took to get there.

The winners of the Ontario Community Newspaper Association’s
(OCNA) 2006 Annual Awards have been announced and Loyalist
has received top honours in every College and University category.
