The hectic schedule and tight deadlines created lots of stress – but it was absolutely worthwhile. I credit the program’s handson experience and class work for the development of the skills I use today. The opportunity to experience the many facets of Print Journalism resulted in a change in my career goal. I discovered that I no longer wanted to be a reporter but could take what I liked best about the program - design, editing and production - and create a job. I was hired at Shield Media a few short months after graduation. In my role as Production Co-ordinator and Proofreader, I get to experience what I consider to be the best parts of the publishing and newspaper industry - holding a book right off the press and helping deliver the news to our city, all the while knowing the time and effort it took to get there. Ontario Community Newspaper Association Recognizes Loyalist Students and Graduates with Top Honours at Annual Awards The winners of the Ontario Community Newspaper Association’s (OCNA) 2006 Annual Awards have been announced and Loyalist has received top honours in every College and University category. BROADCAST JOURNALISM “One of the best decisions I have ever made” by Teresa Burd Broadcast Journalism Summer Events Reporter, Corus Entertainment- Variety 104.5 Cornwall, Ontario One of the best decisions I have ever made was to study Broadcast Journalism at Loyalist College. When I started College at the age of seventeen, I was unsure if this was the right program for me. At first I thought I had made the wrong choice, but the program opened up so many doors for me. You don’t have to get a job in news after you graduate. There are a wide variety of opportunities available. The Broadcast Journalism staff are the greatest. They are very honest with you. The first day of school the teachers told us it would not be easy. They were absolutely right, but they were there for us anytime we needed them. I struggled through parts of the program but my teachers encouraged me to strive harder and I have them to thank for much of my success. My experiences at Loyalist were amazing. I met friends I will have for the rest of my life, and I learned that I CAN do whatever I put my mind to. This specifically shows in my work now. I’m a Summer Events Reporter at Variety 104.5 and I love my job. Every day I learn something new, and meet someone new. It is the most challenging job I have ever had, but also the most rewarding. I grow more and more each day. Everywhere I go in the media industry I meet Loyalist grads. Loyalist is a top competitor in the media industry and they should be proud of that. I’m proud to put Loyalist on my resume because it has helped me shape what I am today. I would tell anyone who is considering the Broadcast Journalism program at Loyalist to make sure they are ready to learn, to put in extra hours, and to work as hard as you possibly can. Your dream job awaits you at the end of it all.
