I had been on a waiting list for the
Practical Nursing Diploma program for a
long time in Nova Scotia, so you can
imagine my excitement when I was
accepted to Loyalist College so quickly! I
packed up my little car with all I could
carry and drove out to Belleville with
much anticipation to begin my two-year
adventure in the Practical Nursing Program.
That was in 2004 and it’s hard to believe
that I’ve graduated and have now been
working in the Belleville area as a
Registered Practical Nurse for over a year!
Just as any preschooler on their first
day of school, it is exciting to begin a new
chapter in your life. The staff at Loyalist
College - everyone from professors to
cafeteria staff and janitors - is more than
willing to help you in a friendly manner.
Whether you are unable to find your
assigned room or just need to know
where the closest washroom is, everyone
is glad to help.
Loyalist may be a small college
compared to others, but it definitely is not
lacking anything because of its size.
There is something for everyone and they
are dedicated to giving you the best
possible education in your chosen field.
The professors are knowledgeable and
passionate about what they are teaching.
I never once went home after a day of
classes and thought that was a waste of
time. As a matter of fact, I made sure not
to miss any days because I knew that
there would be something interesting and
important to learn. The nursing lab at
Loyalist College is state-of-the-art and
fortified our classroom learning into reallife
situations. I was never afraid to ask
for clarification - there was no such thing
as a silly question.
Of course there were times when I felt
overwhelmed with a project or a test that
was coming up, but by keeping my sights
focused on the overall goal of completing
the program, I always got through it and
onto the next challenge. However, there
are numerous support services available to
aide you if you feel you are lagging behind.
I was fortunate to find work as a
Health Care Aide-equivalent in health care
settings while attending College. This
experience strengthened my nursing
skills. Once I graduated, my employer
changed my title from Health Care Aide,
to Registered Practical Nurse! I have
since added a second nursing job to my
resume and feel so satisfied with my
work. The skills I developed at Loyalist
College are enforced everyday. I am
proud to be a Loyalist College Alumnae.
