their personal online portfolios, which they can refer to as they <strong>for</strong>mulatecollege plans over their elementary and high school years.Minority Male Initiative (MMI) Summer Bridge Academy 3Operated by: Houston Community <strong>College</strong> (HCC) Southwest <strong>College</strong>Date of visit: June 22, 2010Location: West Loop CampusPartner institutions: <strong>Students</strong> are recruited by Project GRAD from thefollowing Houston ISD high schools: Sam Houston Math, Science, &Technology Center; Yates <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>; Wheatley <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>; Reagan <strong>High</strong><strong>School</strong>; and Jefferson Davis <strong>High</strong> <strong>School</strong>.Program type: Academic-focused summer bridge programParticipants: Minority male students are targeted, but the program is open toall students at the five Project GRAD high schools. Participants are studentsabout to enter 11th or 12th grade who have passed at least one section of theTAKS. In the summer of 2010, 94 students participated in the program.Length/duration: The program runs <strong>for</strong> six weeks, five days per week (96hours of academic course work and 32 hours of a student success course).Funding: The program is funded with operational funds from the collegebudget. HCC receives funding from the state <strong>for</strong> the credit-bearing classes.Project GRAD recruits students and pays <strong>for</strong> transportation, and participationis incentivized through the Project GRAD scholarship (<strong>for</strong> whichparticipation in summer bridge programming is a requirement). <strong>Students</strong> areawarded a $150 stipend if they successfully complete the program and missfewer than three days.Goals and components: Program goals include developing college readinessamong high school students, providing enriching summer activities, andoffering students a chance to experience a college campus and collegecourses. <strong>Students</strong> participating in the program take either a three-credit coursein digital gaming and simulation or a three-credit course in digital3 The Summer Bridge Academy includes programming <strong>for</strong> students in elementary, middle, and highschools.
