Filter PlatesEliminating EMI/RFI interference has become a stringentlyenforced matter and needs to be considered atthe early stages of design for all electronic systems. Both internal and external interference sources havea major impact on the successful EMC performanceof a new system.Shielding alone is unsatisfactory in shunting unwantedharmonics, conducted or radiated, on power/ controllines that run through compartments of an electronicenclosure. This is particularly applicable in systemsoperating at frequencies above 50 MHz. Isolation andthe incorporation of feed-thru filters (Filter Plates) tofacilitate entering or leaving sensitive compartments inan assembly are excellent methods to bring electronicinterdependent functions/systems into compliance.Filter Plates allow a means of interfacing voltageand/or data (controlling instructions) to distant areas ofa system without compromising its performance. FilterPlates provide excellent isolation from 5 MHz to 18 GHzand beyond, reduce the labor involved for installation,as well as reduce the risk of damaging filter elementsduring installation. Connecting to these Filter Plates iseasily accomplished through several methods, eitherribbon style connectors, harnesses, hard wiring ordirectly soldering leads at a 90° angle to the printedcircuit board. The drawings on pages 107, 113 and 117 illustratehow filter plates are incorporated into an electronic system.Filter Plate Advantages■ Provide an EMI filtered signal line betweenelectronic system modules■ Reduce cost . . . economical method to meet EMCrequirements■ Reduce labor . . . eliminate need to assemble filtersinto a bulkhead■ Outperform surface mount EMI filters at frequenciesabove 50 MHz■ Reduce risk of damage to filter elements due tothermal shock and installation■ Improve reliability . . . every filter plate is 100%tested for key parameters■ Maximize real estate on PCB■ Mixed schematics in a single filter plate packageEasy Mate ® PlatesBolt-in PlatesCustom Plate SolutionsFiltered ArraysSPECTRUM CONTROL INC. • 8031 Avonia Rd. • Fairview, PA 16415 • Phone: 814-474-2207 • Fax: 814-474-2208 • Web site: www.spectrumcontrol.comSPECTRUM CONTROL GmbH • Hansastrasse 6 • 91126 Schwabach, Germany • Phone: (49)-9122-795-0 • Fax: (49)-9122-795-58105
