The industry wide adoption of connectorstandards for computer peripherals has helpedfacilitate the explosion of consumer electronicstechnology. The resulting Universal Serial Bus(USB) connector allows for high-speed, easyconnection of an ever-increasing range ofperipherals to a PC and to each other.Filtered ConnectorsToday, there are several standards governing USBconnectors. The original USB 1.0 has been supplemented byUSB 2.0, which passed in 2000. USB 2.0 allows for significantlyhigher data transfer rates, 480 megabits per second(MPS) vs. only 12 MPS under USB 1.0. Additionally, in 2002USB On-The-Go (OTG) was introduced to further extendthese connectors to dual-role devices that can act as a hostor peripheral. All of these standards have yielded devicesthat are much easier to install and can be freely connectedand disconnected without rebooting the computer system.The Need for EMI & ESD ProtectionInherent in the development of more plug-and-playdevices with hot-plug capability is greater risk of systemexposure to electromagnetic interference (EMI) andelectrostatic discharge (ESD). Both of these phenomenoncan cause transmission signal degradation, loss of data,system lock-up, and permanent hardware damage. Assystem circuitry has gotten more complex to accommodatefaster transfer speeds and smaller package sizes,greater potential exists for damage from EMI and ESDoccurrences. The USB 2.0 spec calls for EMI and ESDprotection according to industry specifications. Thisprotection has become more of a challenge as lessspace is available for components and smaller ICchips are more susceptible to low level damage.A Better Solution...Filtering at the ConnectorSpectrum Control has developed a series of USBconnectors that incorporates EMI and ESD filters into anindustry standard USB package. By moving the EMI filteringor ESD protection to the USB connector, designers can freeupvaluable PC board space for other components and providebetter protection for the entire device. These connectorsare drop-in replacements for unfiltered connectors makingthem ideal solutions for the ongoing miniaturization of peripheraldevices. Spectrum’s EMI filtered and ESD protectedUSB connectors also can eliminate the need to redesign PCboards in the event of noncompliance during either EMC orESD testing.
