TerminologySurface Mount Filters & InductorsInductanceInductance is the ability of a conductor to produceinduced voltage when the current varies. The symbolfor inductance is L and the unit is Henry (H).1 H = 1,000 mH (milli Henry)1 H = 1,000,000 µH (micro Henry)1 H = 1,000,000,000 nH (nano Henry)Inductance of Spectrum Control’s inductors is measuredby using an HP4191A/HP4291A/HP4286A ImpedanceAnalyzer.ImpedanceImpedance is the measure of opposition to a current.The symbol for impedance is Z and the unit is Ohm.Z = √R 2 + X L2Where R is the resistance (not DC resistance) and X L isthe reactance. Z, R and X L are all frequency dependent.Impedance of Spectrum Control’s chip beads is measuredby using an HP4291A/HP4286A Impedance Analyzer.Direct Current Resistance (DCR)DCR is the resistance of the component measuredwith direct current. DCR of Spectrum Control’s inductivecomponents is measured by using an HP4338Amilli-ohmmeter.Maximum Rated CurrentMaximum rated current is a measure of the currentcarrying capacity of the component. When the maximumrated current is applied to the component, the temperaturerise shall not exceed 20°C.Equivalent Circuit of an InductorSelf-Resonant Frequency (SRF)When the frequency changes, the capacitive reactanceX c and inductive reactance X L also change. The selfresonancefrequency is the frequency at which the X Lequals X c . At self-resonance frequency, the inductorshows maximum impedance and a minimum line current.The SRF shall generally be specified as at least twicethe application frequency, except for some specialapplications. The SRF of Spectrum Control’s inductorsis measured by using an HP4291A ImpedanceAnalyzer/HP8753D Network Analyzer.Quality Factor (Q)Q is the quality factor of an inductor. It is the ratio of theinductor’s ability to produce self-induced voltage overthe resistance that reduces the current and the inducedvoltage. It can be considered as the ratio of the inductor’scapability to store energy over the capability to consumeenergy.Q = X LRQ is highly dependent on frequency. Q values of SpectrumControl’s inductors are measured by using an HP4291AImpedance Analyzer/HP8753D Network Analyzer.RLUsing an ideal resistor, an ideal capacitor and an idealinductor, a real inductor can be simulated. The resistorcomponent in an equivalent circuit comes from the DCresistance of the electrode and the electromagneticloss.
