Ephesus was considered <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> third mo<strong>st</strong> significant city <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong>Roman Empire <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> Paul’s day and <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> capital city <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> entire ea<strong>st</strong>ern Roman Empire. Recogniz<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>g this, Paul dedicated overtwo years <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> his life to m<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>i<strong>st</strong>ry <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> this city (Acts 19:10). The archaeological excavations here at Ephesus are perhaps <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong>mo<strong>st</strong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>credible excavations <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> all <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Middle Ea<strong>st</strong>. We will go directly to <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> cave where Apo<strong>st</strong>le John received <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Revelation and wrote it down. Its archaeological museum holds <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong>rema<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>s <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> 3000 year old M<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>oan civilization. The city was a <strong>st</strong>ronghold for <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong>Ea<strong>st</strong>ern Roman (Byzant<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>e) Empire from 961 AD until 1204 AD. This city was boughtby <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Republic <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> Venice <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> 1204 AD and became an outpo<strong>st</strong> for <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Italian Renaissance. In 1669 AD, Heraklion was captured by <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Ottoman Turks and made part <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong>irempire. F<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>ally, <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> 1913, Heraklion (and all <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> Crete) was <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>corporated <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>to <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> K<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>gdom<<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> Greece. Fir<strong>st</strong> settled by <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Phoenicians <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> 1200 BC, <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> island became part <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> Greece <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> 1821. The expansion <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <strong>tour</strong>ismhere <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> 20 th century has resulted <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> growth <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> island’s economy and popularity. The island is one <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> mo<strong>st</strong>breathtak<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>g <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong> all <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Aegean and is full <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> cafes, shop, and re<strong>st</strong>aurants. TheArch <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> Titus actually depicts some <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> spoils <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> war that Titus returned to Rome with, <<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>clud<<strong>st</strong>rong>in</<strong>st</strong>rong>g a giant Menorah (sevenbranchedcandle<strong>st</strong>ick) as well as pieces <<strong>st</strong>rong>of</<strong>st</strong>rong> furniture and o<<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong>r implements that Titus took from <<strong>st</strong>rong>the</<strong>st</strong>rong> Jewish Temple.
