19ProgramsHairdressing and Cosmetology CourseDescriptionThe Hairdressing and Cosmetology Program prepares students to securean entry-level position in a salon or spa. The program includes theoryinstruction, a hands-on workshop and practice on live models andschool guests in a service area that emulates the salon or salon serviceenvironment. We provide a strong foundation of skills and knowledge tosuccessfully practice cosmetology in order to prepare the students to passthe State Licensing Examination. This training provides development inpersonal and professional habits to create a successful career.The Hairdressing and Cosmetology program is divided into two mainlevels: The Pre-salon and the Student Salon Course Objectives.Pre-salon LevelThe Pre-salon level is a comprehensive classroom training phase thatprovides the skills and knowledge to perform the basic service procedures.The focus is on technical skill practices, which help students build theirconfidence. This phase includes the necessary training to successfullytransition from the classroom to the student salon floor. This phase includestheory instruction to meet our state board requirements prepare thestudent to take and pass the state board examination and for the salonarea.Pre-Salon level consists of the following skill setsHaircutting (including utilizing tools and implements)Hair designing (utilizing the air former, curling iron, rollers, pin curls,and finger waves)Hair coloring and lighteningManicuring with artificial nail applicationSkin Care and Make-upInterpersonal Skills and MarketingTrichology (the study of the hair and its diseases and disorders)Permanent Waving, and Chemical RelaxingHair Design and Long Hair DesignStudent Salon LevelDuring this phase students receive new skill and technical informationthat may include trends and new techniques will be introduced. Studentscontinue to work on building their speed, accuracy, performance leveland quality of each service process. This customized phase helps studentspinpoint their professional and technical goals to expand their expertise.During this segment of learning, the educator will provide training optionsand suggestions for each student to develop service skills, professionalrecommendation knowledge and technical abilities.Student Salon level consists of the followingAdvanced Procedures and Applications of Hair Coloring ServicesAdvanced Procedures and Applications of Permanent Waving ServicesState Laws and State Board ProceduresAdvanced Procedures and Applications of Haircutting and StylingTechniquesSalon Ecology, Electricity, Trichology and Anatomy and PhysiologyAdvanced Procedures and Applications of the Skin (includes custom andorganic masks and various techniques of make-up applications)Advanced Procedures and Applications of Long Hair Techniques andHair AdditionsManagement and Job Search (includes how to write a resume,completing employment applications, compensation methods, and howto obtain employment)Salon ExperienceIn addition, during this level, the students will be finishing and refining theirskills to be in the Student Salon area where they will perform work on guest/guests or mannequins to demonstrate their ability to execute what theyhave learned. In addition to the required classroom hours, the studentsare required to have a minimum number of Student Salon units in eachsubject. Each service or assignment a student performs in the Student Salonis recorded on a daily basis. These services/units are part of the graduationrequirements. Students will learn the skills necessary to recommendhairstyles and hair care products best suited to the needs of individualcustomers, thorough analysis of hair type, facial shape, and hair structure.Mastery of these skills will prepare students to build and retain long-termhair care customers maximizing income potential in the cosmetologyindustry
