36PoliciesNY Academic StandingAny student who is absent more than 15 percent of the total number ofinstructional hours offered during each marking period and who has notmaintained academic progress shall be placed on academic probation. Anystudent who fails to meet academic progress at the end of any markingperiod, regardless of attendance will also be placed on academic probation.A marking period is defined as 18 weeks for full time Cosmetology studentsand 36 weeks for part time Cosmetology students. There are two markingperiods for make-up Programs. The first marking period ends at themid-point of the program. Acceptable academic progress is defined as aminimum cumulative grade average of 75%.A student placed on academic probation who fails to raise his or hercumulative grade average to 75% and who fails to maintain attendancefor at least 85% of the instructional hours offered during the probationaryperiod shall be dismissed. Note: In addition to the requirements forNY Academic Standing, students are also required to maintain overallStandards of Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) to maintain eligibilityfor Federal Financial Assistance from title IV HEA funds. Those Standardsrequire a cumulative rate of attendance of 75% (regardless of attendanceduring a marking period), and a cumulative grade average of 75% at theend of each evaluation cycle. A full description can be found in SatisfactoryAcademic Progress (SAP) Policy.Record Retention PolicyThe student’s entire record shall be maintained for at least 6 years on-siteafter a student either terminates training or graduates. After that, theschool will maintain the following student records for 20 years off site:Evidence of compliance with the school’s admissions requirementsCredit granted for previous experience or training;Dates of admission start dates and withdrawal or completion dates;Reasons for withdrawals when known;Daily attendance;Student transcripts indicating achievements; andTuition and financial aid records, when applicable.Leave of Absence<strong>Empire</strong> Education Group does not offer leave of absences to enrolledstudents. If a student needs to interrupt his/her training, he/she must bedropped from the program and re-enrolled upon return. The re-enrollmentprocess will be according to the Re-enrollment Policy.WithdrawalAny student who withdraws from his/her contracted course or fails tocomplete his/ her training will have notice placed in his/her Student fileas to progress at the point of withdrawal. A student making satisfactoryacademic progress at the point of withdrawal may apply for re-enrollmentin the <strong>School</strong> and will be considered to be making satisfactory academicprogress and meeting Achievement and Attendance Evaluation (AAE)standards at the point of re-entry; likewise, a student not makingsatisfactory academic progress at the point of withdrawal may apply forre-enrollment in the <strong>School</strong> and will not be considered to be makingsatisfactory academic progress or meeting Achievement and AttendanceEvaluation(AAE) standards at the point of re-entry.Transfer StudentsStudents who transfer into an <strong>Empire</strong> Education Group school fromanother school system will be treated as a new Student in terms of makingsatisfactory academic progress.Grounds for Dismissal/suspensionThe <strong>School</strong> reserves the right to dismiss/suspend a student for anyreason, including but not limited to the following: providing fraudulentinformation or documentation of requirements for admission orattendance; failure to attend classes regularly; refusal to complete assignedclasses or Student Salon work; breach of school rules and regulations;falsification of school records; cheating; conduct or conditions that posea direct, adverse threat (including bullying) to other students, guests oremployees of <strong>Empire</strong> Education Group; or failure to make required cashpayments. Intentional destruction of school property, destruction ofother students’ or staff members’ property, physical violence and threatsof violence can mean immediate dismissal/suspension without previouswarning. Students are responsible for their own education equipmentand personal belongings that may have been left in the <strong>School</strong>. Theseitems must be removed by the student from the <strong>School</strong>’s premises within30 days from the date of the dismissal/suspension letter or they will beremoved by the <strong>School</strong> and disposed of accordingly. Any student who isabsent for fourteen (14) consecutive calendar days will be terminated.
