Premiere for the most powerful truck in the world - The Bigger Hammer January 7 was a historic day for all truck enthusiasts. Volvo Trucks launched the world’s most powerful series-manufactured truck. The Volvo FH16 with 700 hp and 3150 Nm of torque. Volvo Trucks is the first manufacturer in the world to be able to put a 700 hp badge on its vehicles. The truck model in question is the company’s flagship, the Volvo FH16, which to date has had a maximum power output of 660 hp. “The Volvo FH16 is intended for the very heaviest and most demanding of transport operations. It is also a highly prestigious truck for the customer who is looking for something truly out of the ordinary. And with 700 hp, the Volvo FH16 sets itself apart from everything else in the industry,” says Staffan Jufors, President and CEO of Volvo Trucks. The Volvo D16G Euro 5 is equipped with a 16-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine with turbocharger and intercooler. (No replacement for Displacement - ed.) With higher power, one might well expect that fuel consumption would head in the same direction, but that is not the case. “Our aim is to have both the best performance and the best fuel economy in the segment. We have succeeded in keeping fuel consumption the same as before despite the power increase. In a comparison with the competition, we are doing very well indeed,” reveals Staffan Jufors. The Volvo FH16 is certified for the new Euro 5 European emission requirements that come into force in autumn 2009, which means that emissions of nitrogen oxide have been cut by more than 40 percent. In other words, the Volvo FH16 has become even more powerful but without compromising on the environment. In addition to the 700 hp version the Volvo FH16 is also available in variants producing 540 and 600 hp respectively. The Club will be need a Membership Chairman for 2009. We will also be looking for several members to assist with the Kart Expo exhibit, and we are always in recruiting mode for Club members to staff “Chicagoland’s Loooong Race” for 2009. No formal training is required and we will provide plenty of OJT throughout the upcoming MC competition season. - The BMW Sauber F1 Team raised the curtain on its 2009 season in Formula One in Valencia, Spain with Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld unveiling the new BMW Sauber F1.09, followed by Robert Kubica doing the first laps with the new car. Development work on the new car began as long ago as February 2008 because of the major rule changes that were agreed with a completely new aerodynamic package, slick tires and the introduction of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). BMW says it has worked hard to reduce weight in the car to allow the KERS system to be added without losing the ability to have ballast. - Panasonic Toyota Racing started its 2009 season with the presentation of its latest Formula 1 car; the TF109. Following a ‘blockbuster movie’ theme, the team launched the TF109 exclusively on the internet on 15 January ahead of its first test on 19 January. New regulations for 2009 have radically altered the appearance of Formula 1 cars, with wider front wings, narrower rear wings and slick tyres amongst the changes. Panasonic Toyota Racing is preparing for its eighth season in Formula 1 and its target is to fight for its first Grand Prix victory this year. - The Williams-Toyota FW31, the team’s 2009 season race car, made its track debut at the Algarve Motor Park circuit in southern Portugal on January 19th at the first official Formula One test of the year. After completing 17 laps this morning in the hands of AT&T Williams’ test driver, Nico Hülkenberg, the team was satisfied with initial progress. Technical Director, Sam Michael, said, “This morning has been full wet, but the weather hasn’t really affected what we wanted to do, because our goal has been to get the car out on track, check all the systems work, be sure parts aren’t touching each other, nothing is burning, and that’s all proved to be okay. It would be good to get some dry running, and the weather should allow this later in the week. In terms of first impressions of the car, we of course haven’t spent any time on set-up or performance work yet, that’ll all come later, but so far the car is running fine.” - The first Lada vehicle manufactured by both Renault and AvtoVAZ will go on sale in 2009. Russian automotive manufacturer AvtoVAZ, also known as Lada, is 25% owned by Renault. The AvtoVAZ plant and headquarters in Togliatti, Russia, is where the Lada Kalina is being assembled and going through quality control. - And sadly, we learned of the passing of Dean Johnson: Dean Paul Johnson, age 61, of Verona, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at the Moundview Memorial Hospital and Clinics in Friendship, following a heart attack. Dean was born Feb. 10, 1947, in Joliet, Ill., to Norman R. and Geraldine G. (Hannon) Johnson. He was raised and educated in Joliet and attended Northern Illinois University. He met his wife, Linda, while working a Tire Wall Day at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, Ill. Amateur road racing was Dean’s passion since 1965. He belonged to Midwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs, where he served for a number of years as chief steward and president. He also belonged to Sports Car Club of America. Dean built and raced an Austin Healy Sprite and was involved in organizing and working racing events. Dean, Linda and his best buddy, his dog, AJ traveled throughout the United States working races.
