Chicagoland’s Loooong Race
A Rainy afternoon at the Autobahn in June is Better than the 2 feet of snow in the front
yard in January. Art Jahn (70) is ahead of Bruce Weatherston (51), with Scott Durbin
(41) in the spray. Bruce eventually came 1st overall and 1st in FC, with Scott taking 2nd
The Road Ahead - 2009 has Arrived
The new IMTS calendar is up, and we should be used to writing 2009 on the checks.
The road ahead is full of pot holes, particularly if you favor Westbound I-90. There is
a full compliment of Midwestern Council and CSCC events on the calendar and the
Midwestern Council Awards Banquet is already in the books. The Rolex 24 starts on
Saturday (1/24/09), with that event lighting the fuse on the North American Road Racing
Calendar for 2009.
The MC Competition season will begin on April 18th with a Driver School on Saturday,
followed by a W2W race on Sunday, April 19th. Prior to that, you will have an opportunity
to practice talking about racing at the Kart Expo on February 21st and 22nd,
followed by the North Suburban SCC Indoor Driver School at the Autobahn on March
21st, and there will be an Annual Tech session at Advanced Autosports on April 4th.
The whole schedule is listed on Page 2, so check it out and update your own calendar.
It’s going to be an action packed year, and it’s time to get it started!

some new blood to the club. In exchange for name, address,
RacingWire.Info - Club Racing News Website Is Set to Launch
The Downshift - Page
RacingWire.info is set to Launch January 24, 2009 at 3:30 pm. If you are
thinking that sounds like the same time the green flag will fall on the start
of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, you are absolutely correct. The Rolex 24 is the
unofficial start of the racing season. So what better time to launch a new
website?
What will you find when you visit RacingWire.info? There will be coverage of all levels of motorsports from Karts to Formula 1.
RacingWire.info will evolve into the internet’s #1 source for up to the minute news, in depth interviews, and feature stories. More
than just on track action, we will cover technology, innovation, lifestyle, and the business side of racing.
What makes us different from the dozens of websites out there that offer similar information? We think there are several things
which set us apart.
* First and foremost RacingWire.info is not an afterthought. We’re not an offshoot of someone’s magazine or television network.
Our sole focus is providing content for web users.
* RacingWire.info is going to devote plenty of coverage of grassroots motorsports. We are looking for reporters to provide
coverage of even the most regional and local events. This is one of our marketing tools. People will find us to check out the
coverage of their local events and see our comprehensive coverage of all motorsports.
* RacingWire.info content will always be free.
* We have several innovative ideas regarding race coverage which we can’t share at this time. Our coverage plans are unlike
anything that has ever been done before.
We are starting small. It will take months or even years for us to be the site we want to be, but that will not deter us from achieving
our goal. We would love for you to join us on our journey. Join us as a reporter or photographer, or join us as a loyal visitor. Either
way, we hope you will enjoy what you find here and don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail and let me know what you think.
RacingWire.info will provide more club racing coverage than any media anywhere but we can’t do it without your help. We need
to spread the word to the regions and the timing and scoring folks about our need for timely submission of event results and points
standings. We will post results for any SCCA, NASA, Midwest Council, event Other clubs wishing to be covered should contact
us at desk.racingwire@gmail.com. We’ll also post race reports and photos. Our only stipulation is that these must be competition
events. Solo, rally, road racing are good... PDXs and track days are not.
Lastly, I want to assure people that this is not going to become a NASCAR all the time site. We will cover NASCAR and we will
cover it extensively... but we will work hard to provide substantial coverage of all series. A site like this can’t, and shouldn’t, ignore
NASCAR while trying to make the claim of being a source of comprehensive racing news.
I hope you will all support RacingWire.info by visiting it often. Also, don’t forget to sign up for breaking news and update e-mails.
Click to our advertisers through the links on the site.
Chicagoland SCC Will Host Exhibit At ‘09 Sodi Kart Expo - Feb 21 & 22
Chicagoland Sports Car will host a booth at 2009 Kart Expo which will take place over the weekend of February 21st
and 22nd at the DuPage Expo Center, part of the Pheasant Run complex in St Charles, Illinois. We will be working on
plans for this year’s event for the next several weeks and will be counting on the members of the Club to assist with
staffing and preparation. The focus of CSCC’s presence at this event will be to provide awareness to the Midwestern
Council road racing opportunities available to Karters and guests of the Kart Expo. This will be the second year Chicagoland
Sports Car Club is attending the Kart Expo. Our experience at the 2008 event was very positive, talking to
many about the cars and tracks that we visit. We also re-connected with a number of former MC members that are
active in Karting with their sons and daughters - and brought them up to speed on what they have been missing. If
you would like to get involved in this event, please contact Larry Best or Bill Boesen. Save the Date and join us.

If you could change or improve anything in MC (or CSCC) what would it be?
John: More tracks and more cars. Evan: More tracks.
Who is faster, John or Evan?
John: I am faster in the Datsun and Evan is faster in the Lotus, but not by much. Evan: Me without a doubt.
Who breaks more parts? Who does the most repairs?
John: Evan, he has the ability to keep Randy Cross very busy. Evan: Well, dad only gives me the car before he feels it needs
to be upgraded.
What do you enjoy most about racing with your father/son?
John: Spending time with Evan. Evan: Spending time with my dad. Other than Keith and Dale who else can say that have
Premiere for the most powerful truck in the world - The Bigger Hammer
January 7 was a historic day for all truck enthusiasts. Volvo Trucks launched the world’s most powerful series-manufactured
truck. The Volvo FH16 with 700 hp and 3150 Nm of torque. Volvo Trucks is the first manufacturer in the world
to be able to put a 700 hp badge on its vehicles. The truck model in question is the company’s flagship, the Volvo
FH16, which to date has had a maximum power output of 660 hp.
“The Volvo FH16 is intended for the very heaviest and most demanding of transport
operations. It is also a highly prestigious truck for the customer who is looking for
something truly out of the ordinary. And with 700 hp, the Volvo FH16 sets itself apart
from everything else in the industry,” says Staffan Jufors, President and CEO of Volvo
Trucks. The Volvo D16G Euro 5 is equipped with a 16-litre 6-cylinder diesel engine with
turbocharger and intercooler. (No replacement for Displacement - ed.)
With higher power, one might well expect that fuel consumption would head in the same
direction, but that is not the case. “Our aim is to have both the best performance and the
best fuel economy in the segment. We have succeeded in keeping fuel consumption the
same as before despite the power increase. In a comparison with the competition, we
are doing very well indeed,” reveals Staffan Jufors.
The Volvo FH16 is certified for the new Euro 5 European emission requirements that come into force in autumn 2009,
which means that emissions of nitrogen oxide have been cut by more than 40 percent. In other words, the Volvo FH16
has become even more powerful but without compromising on the environment. In addition to the 700 hp version the
Volvo FH16 is also available in variants producing 540 and 600 hp respectively.
Stay Tuned: We’ve got another great project car from Bruce Weatherston coming up in “The Downshift”. While Bruce
is getting us the details, set your time machine dial to 1932.

More Than I Know
By Larry Best
Ken Rochocki captured this lineup of “DairyAir” near his home in Harvard Illinois.
- We need your in-car video! If you have captured video at any of our favorite tracks throughout the season, we would like to use it
in an in-progress promotional Club video project. Please contact Bill Boesen with details of what you have. Bill will arrange to get
your video. If your video “moment” is on re-recordable media, Bill will get it returned to you.
- Rich Cwik, the highly censored CSCC Club Secretary would like to remind you to return your Final Election Ballot, although it may
already be too late. It’s already 2009, and we need to meet to inaugurated the inbound BoD for this year.
- The Chicagoland Sports Car Club Banquet is on February 7th at the Mill Rose. You should have received an invitation in the mail
back in December. If it was misplaced, a replacement is available off the “CSCC-Racing.Com” web site. There is a link at the bottom
of the home page, and the document is also behind the “Downloads and Forms navigation bar.
- Jobs are available at CSCC! The Club will be need a Membership Chairman for 2009. We will also be looking for several members
to assist with the Kart Expo exhibit, and we are always in recruiting mode for Club members to staff “Chicagoland’s Loooong Race”
for 2009. No formal training is required and we will provide plenty of OJT throughout the upcoming MC competition season.
- The BMW Sauber F1 Team raised the curtain on its 2009 season in Formula One in Valencia, Spain with Robert Kubica and Nick
Heidfeld unveiling the new BMW Sauber F1.09, followed by Robert Kubica doing the first laps with the new car. Development work
on the new car began as long ago as February 2008 because of the major rule changes that were agreed with a completely new
aerodynamic package, slick tires and the introduction of KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). BMW says it has worked hard
to reduce weight in the car to allow the KERS system to be added without losing the ability to have ballast.
- Panasonic Toyota Racing started its 2009 season with the presentation of its latest Formula 1 car; the TF109. Following a ‘blockbuster
movie’ theme, the team launched the TF109 exclusively on the internet on 15 January ahead of its first test on 19 January.
New regulations for 2009 have radically altered the appearance of Formula 1 cars, with wider front wings, narrower rear wings and
slick tyres amongst the changes. Panasonic Toyota Racing is preparing for its eighth season in Formula 1 and its target is to fight
for its first Grand Prix victory this year.
- The Williams-Toyota FW31, the team’s 2009 season race car, made its track debut at the Algarve Motor Park circuit in southern
Portugal on January 19th at the first official Formula One test of the year. After completing 17 laps this morning in the hands of
AT&T Williams’ test driver, Nico Hülkenberg, the team was satisfied with initial progress. Technical Director, Sam Michael, said,
“This morning has been full wet, but the weather hasn’t really affected what we wanted to do, because our goal has been to get
the car out on track, check all the systems work, be sure parts aren’t touching each other, nothing is burning, and that’s all proved
to be okay. It would be good to get some dry running, and the weather should allow this later in the week. In terms of first impressions
of the car, we of course haven’t spent any time on set-up or performance work yet, that’ll all come later, but so far the car is
running fine.”
- The first Lada vehicle manufactured by both Renault and AvtoVAZ will go on sale in 2009. Russian automotive manufacturer
AvtoVAZ, also known as Lada, is 25% owned by Renault. The AvtoVAZ plant and headquarters in Togliatti, Russia, is where the
Lada Kalina is being assembled and going through quality control.
- And sadly, we learned of the passing of Dean Johnson:
Dean Paul Johnson, age 61, of Verona, died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, at the Moundview Memorial Hospital and Clinics in Friendship,
following a heart attack. Dean was born Feb. 10, 1947, in Joliet, Ill., to Norman R. and Geraldine G. (Hannon) Johnson. He was
raised and educated in Joliet and attended Northern Illinois University. He met his wife, Linda, while working a Tire Wall Day at
Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, Ill. Amateur road racing was Dean’s passion since 1965. He belonged to Midwestern
Council of Sports Car Clubs, where he served for a number of years as chief steward and president. He also belonged to Sports
Car Club of America. Dean built and raced an Austin Healy Sprite and was involved in organizing and working racing events. Dean,
Linda and his best buddy, his dog, AJ traveled throughout the United States working races.

Event Information:
a regional event!
The site is an indoor heated facility that is centrally located
in the Chicago area. Last year over 800 buyers attended,
and the vendor spaces were almost sold out. This event
has had strong support from all of the British car clubs in
the Chicago area, and this year looks to be bigger than
ever before. Additionally, another major (but non-competitive)
event of interest to automotive hobbyists is being held
simultaneously in the same complex.
The British Car Swap Meet & Autojumble is advertised in all
major enthusiast publications as well as many daily newspapers
of all major cities surrounding Chicago in a multistate
campaign; many out of state buyers and vendors
attend this event each year.
Fees and Ticket Prices:
Gate Admission tickets will be $5. Kids 12 and under (accompanied
by an adult) are still free. As always, parking is
Vendor spaces will be $25 per space (10x10 feet), tables
are $5 each, chairs are $1 each (sorry, no tail gate selling
allowed). Vendor spaces may be filled by early to mid February,
so early registration is highly recommended. Download
Doors will be open for vendor setup at 6:00am Sunday. If
Chicagoland’s Loooong Race - Big Wheel Competition
Those 50 Lap wheel to Wheel races are a big deal at Chicagoland’s Loooong Race, but “Jerry Smith’s Big Wheel
Race” is the featured event that runs at noon on Sunday. Named in memory of one of Chicagoland’s most active
members, Jerry worked hard to promote the event every year. Today, Patt Martin coordinates all of the details to
make sure the Big Wheel event maintains traditional values and excitement for these future MC W2W competitors.
