Rice, aged 27, <strong>and</strong> Lydia, wife of Rev.R. H. Close, died 1843, in her 28th year. CatherineKeefer, beloved wife of Wm. 0. Eastman, died 1892,aged 84 years."Each name, except that of the v<strong>et</strong>eran preacher,is followed by an appropriate text : "He giv<strong>et</strong>h Hisbeloved sleep. Blessed are the pure in heart. Precious inthe sight of the Lord is the death of His saints. Thereremain<strong>et</strong>h therefore a rest for the people of God.""In memory of Theresa M. Johnson, wife of JohnA. Gowanlock, who, on April ist, 1885, was taken prisonerby Big Bear during the massacre at Frog Lake,N.W.T., <strong>and</strong> after two months' captivity was rescuedby Col. Strange. Died Sept. 12th, 1889, aged 36years.""In memory of Lieut. John E. Burch, son of 0.<strong>and</strong> E. J. Burch," born at St. Anns, 1874, killed inSouth Africa while leading a charge against the Boers,July i6th, 1900."Of a different type, the next, spending the mostof his long life near the site of his interment :"In memory of Jhon, son of John <strong>and</strong> CharityKennedy, born in Sussex Co., N.J., 1787, came to thisprovince June, 1795, died 1874, aged 87. Was an honoredelder of the Presbyterian church for more thanfifty years. A man ready for every good work. Blessedare the dead who die in the Lord."Several small brown stones have merely initials<strong>and</strong> date, as skilled workmen no doubt were rare. Onehas the words, "A. G. Snyder, 1807," <strong>and</strong> another alittle larger, "Here lies the body of Elizab<strong>et</strong>h Snyder,wife of Adam Snyder, 1807, aged 66." The l<strong>et</strong>teringwas rude, <strong>and</strong> some lines below indecipherable, beingfilled with mould. A device formerly used, the energ<strong>et</strong>icuse of a brush <strong>and</strong> water was here not available,<strong>and</strong>, thinking some valuable information was hidden,various plans were tried, the succes.sful one being astrong hairpin, the only result being these lines :
