52at Chippawa, 5th July, 1814, <strong>and</strong> was formerly a sergeantin Butler's Rangers.The following shows not only the early s<strong>et</strong>tlementof Stamford township, but the strength of the bond b<strong>et</strong>weenmaster <strong>and</strong> servant in those early days, as shownby fifty years of service."In memory of Samuel Montgomery, whodeparted this life 28th October, 1838, in the 87th yearof his age. He was a native of County Down, Irel<strong>and</strong>,<strong>and</strong> emigrated to America in the year 1768, <strong>and</strong> s<strong>et</strong>tledin Stamford, district of Niagara, in 1788, in thefamily of the late Archibald Thompson, where heresided till his death."Another tombstone tells of James Thomson, anative of Roxburgh, Scotl<strong>and</strong>, who s<strong>et</strong>tled in Stamfordin 1785, dying in 1831, aged eighty. The epitaphs ofeighty years ago som<strong>et</strong>imes show an originality inorthography <strong>and</strong> syntax, as :"In memory of Susanna McMicking, who departedthis life Sept. iith, 1821, aged 30 years.Ep<strong>et</strong>af S. U.Underneath this stone doth lyAs much beauty as could dieWhich when alive did vigger giveTo as much virtue as could live.""In memory of Thomas McMiciing, who wasborn April nth, 1750, died Feb. nth, 1830, in the80th year of his age.Stop passenger upon the roadDon't overlook this shrineFor if thou art a friend of GodHere lies a friend of thine.""In memory of James Middaugh, who departedthis life June, 1839, aged 79 years.farewell my wife mylife is past—my love toyou so long did last, butnow no sorrow for m<strong>et</strong>ake, belove my childrenfor my sake."Here is another mosaic of history :"Sacred to the memory of Daniel Keith, who died28th Aug., 1824, by a fall from General Sir IsaacBrock's monument, aged 25."
