96An inscription of two words reminds us ofin the Catacombs of Rome, thus :"Elizabeth ColeSleeps.Solomon S. ColeRest in peace."those"Our father and mother: James Neelon, 1857, aged63 ; Nancy, his wife. Rest precious dust."A longer inscription on a large monument—"Sacred to the memory of Thos. Read, died 1853,aged 53. Sincerely lamented by all who knew him.His Christian faith was manifested in his life, for alongwith being a most affectionate husband, a kind fatherand a faithful friend, he was alwa3'S foremost in everygood work, tending to the glory of God and the good ofhis fellow men. 'Laying up for himself a good foundation.'"The only reference to the first settlers is on a finered Aberdeen granite monument—Lt. Col. P. Gregory, of U. E. Loyalist descent, died 1882, aged 72. The next were early called away.Near this, "John F. Gregory, B. C. L., d.ied atToronto, aged 27.""Surg. Major General Jago T. Hill,M.D., "aged 18 years, 1875.""William Hill, eldest son of Solomon Hill, M. P.,died 1853, aged- 69."From what distant lands came these ? :"Dorothy, wife of Columbus Gildia, died 1850,aged 66 years.""At rest,1830—1903."Joseph Franklin, a native of FloresThe verses here arethose of an earlier date :of a higher standard than"True to the last.aged 35.Malissa, wife of Geo. 97Another asks a question, like that in the Lewistongraveyard :"O sacred grave, what precious dustIs here committed to your trust,But oh, the soul is that on highTo shine forever in the sky ? "Though not mentioned, the next must have beenone of the earliest to come from the United States inRevolution times :—"Adam Bowman, died 1865, aged 89."As showing different nationalities, are found thenames of Thurcsson, Culp, Powell, Ismond, Hill, Goold,Woodall, Furminger, Pawling, Martindale, Rose.THOROLD CEMETERY.The largest monument is of grey limestone withwhite marble tablets, to George Keefer and his fourwives.
