PAUL'S CHURCH.Since this is an old s<strong>et</strong>tlement <strong>and</strong> here so muchfighting occurred in the war of 1812, it might be expectedthat there would be found the <strong>graves</strong> of manymilitary heroes, <strong>and</strong> indeed military <strong>and</strong> naval heroesabound, but there are few dates farther back than 1820in any of the numerous graveyards here. At thatdreadful holocaust, when the explosion occurred at theattack on Fort Erie no doubt the most were buriedwhere they fell. It has been already seen that one navalhero was buried at Niagara <strong>and</strong> another at Lundy'sLane. Many r<strong>et</strong>ired officers must have s<strong>et</strong>tled here,as witness :"This monument as a tribute of love <strong>and</strong> affectionis erected by their thirteen surviving children to WilliamStanton, Staffordshire, Engl<strong>and</strong>, Dep.
