Down, Irel<strong>and</strong>, 1744, enlisted in King's 8thRegt., served as sergeant in Germany <strong>and</strong> America, <strong>and</strong>promoted to Butler's Rangers." In his memorial givinghis services he says : "They (the Rangers) were Britons<strong>and</strong> the descendants of Britons <strong>and</strong> trainedto arms, d<strong>et</strong>ermined to transmit to posterity therights that are dear to man, or nobly perish in the defenceof our King, <strong>and</strong> God, who never forsakes Hispeople, brought us through many dangers <strong>and</strong> trials."His son, Capt. George Turney, of the 2nd LincolnMilitia, was killed at the battle of Chippawa, 5th July,1814, that day so disastrous to our forces. The nanifwas originally written Torney.STAMFORD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHThe Presbyterian Church of Stamford was organizedover a century^ ago, but unfortunately the earlvrecords are not compl<strong>et</strong>e. The church was built in 1787,ranking next to the Mohawk church near Brantford, thefirst church built in Ontario, but was replaced by thepresent one. One of the oldest <strong>graves</strong> has this inscription:"In memory of Leah, consort of John Rowe, whodeparted this life" Sept. 5th, 1793, aged 25 years."John Rowe must apparently have soon taken anotherhelpmate, who also died young :"In memory of Mary, consort of John Rowe, whodeparted this life Mar. 4tli, 1797, aged 22 years."Capt.
