Ralph Leeming, ofYorkshire, Engl<strong>and</strong>, ordained by the Bishop of London,first Missionary, Soci<strong>et</strong>y for the Propagation of theGospel in Foreign Parts, to the Gore District <strong>and</strong> firstRector of Ancaster, born 1789, died 1872, aged 83."A large flat stone tells a path<strong>et</strong>ic story, showingthat the "stranger within the gates" was not neglected:"Eliza M. Johnston, of Rochester, N. Y., died1827, aged 17.A stranger's gravePlaced here by her local respected friends."
91Among a row of stones, all with the name of Dur<strong>and</strong>,a large altar tomb bears the following :"In memory of James Dur<strong>and</strong>, born in Engl<strong>and</strong>,1775, died 1833, resided in the <strong>Canada</strong>s 34 years.Served his country as a Legislator <strong>and</strong> as a Captainduring the late war with honor <strong>and</strong> uprightness, butabove all, his Maker, as an honest man. 'Do untoothers as you would have others do to you" was thegreat motto of his life. His children will ever rememberhim as the kindest parent, <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Canada</strong>s as apatriot <strong>and</strong> friend.The following beautiful lines were written by himselfin memory of his lamented consort Keziali Dur<strong>and</strong>:High in the Heaven of Heavens I trustYou now repose among the just.Thy virtues well earned meed ;The pleasing hope my soul inspiresAs wages grief my bosom firesAnd gives me joy indeed."Jas.
