't66HYPERTEXT 3.0 A. S. Byatt Overyiew as an example, we find the topic of the document abovethree rows of five square icons each (see Figure 17). This arrangement, whichalso avoids the linearity of a table of contents, has the advantage of permittingone to employ some of the same icons both in overviews and at the footofeach screen.Chronologies represent another form of sitemap or overview, which onecan easily create using two-column tables in HTML. They offer a means ofclearly organizing materials or even entire courses that have a strong chronologicalorientation. Any timeline with links in fact serves as an overview forthe materials it joins. Although timelines provide a means of organizationparticularly convenient to authors, remember that they may simplify complexrelationships and do little to compel the interest of a reader unacquaintedwith the subject.Images of natural objects, like the photograph of a cell or maps, providea kind of naturally occurring concept map that authors can easily apply.Attaching links to labels in technical diagrams similarly provides an obviousway of enriching conventional information technology. These kinds ofoverviews, incidentally, exemplify a perfect use for World Wide Web imagemaps. Perhaps my favorite is a map of Italy showing major Italian websites:click on the tiny square representing a particular city, and a link takes you toits website. If hypermedia is characterized by connectivity, to realize its potential onemust employ devices that emphasize that quality. Lists, tables of contents, andindices, though still of significantuse, do notworkinthis manner, butone maywish to use them in addition to other kinds of graphic organizingdevices, asdoes the elegant Kon-Tiki Interac-tive CD-ROM, which parallels its circularoverview with an interactive outline. Mousing down on its individual elements, say, that for the Kon-Tiki itself, produces a list of eleven items (Figures 19-20).When converting text documents originally created for book technologyfor presentation on hypermedia, one may occasionally use the documentitself as its own overview. Any document in a hypermedia system with morethan a fewlinks in essence seryes as a sitemap since, once opened, itprovidesthe immediate center and reference point for the reader's next act of exploration. The author of educational materials, particularly those involving literarytexts or those that place primary emphasis on the details of a text, maytherefore wish to take advantage of this quality of hypermedia. Section 7 ofIn Memoiam (see Figure 9) exemplifies a brief tert document that functionsas its own overview or sitemap in a Storyspace web, and each section ofthe heavily annotated HTML version of "Hudson's Statue" by Carlyle func-
