Clicking on "Collage" takesone either to one possible terminal point of the web or to a definition of theterm from Le Petit Robert. Since this dictionary definition, which mentionsPicasso and Braque, serves as a another ready-made overview or crossroadsdocument, I linked various words in it to permit readers to traverse foris's materialsin multiple ways. "COLIAGE," for example, leads to a dozen and a halfmentions of the term. and the names of the artists link to illustrations of theirwork. Because I created this web largely as an experiment and not for publication, I did not have to worry at the moment about copyright issues andtherefore scanned monochrome images of Braque's Le Counier and Picasso'sStill Lifewith Chair Coningand linked them to the names of the artists. At thesame time I added H. W. Janson's discussions of collage, linking them aswell. Finally, I created a list of thirty authors whose statements foris includedin "Collage between Writing and Painting," linking this list to the phrase"also featuring" on the title screen.At this point, some of the similarities between hypertext and collage willhave become obvious. Having first appropriated foris's materials by placingthem in a web and then adding materials to it that they seemed to demand, Ifound that, like all hlpertexts, it had become open-ended, a kind of Velcrotextto which various kinds of materials began attaching themselves.
