Search Strategy for Historical Documents on TacticalHerbicidesSOURCESThe <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Army research on <strong>tactical</strong> <strong>herbicide</strong>s was conducted primarily by theArmy Chemical Corps’ Plant Sciences Laboratory, Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland andit predecessors. A search was conducted <strong>of</strong> more than a thousand documents <strong>of</strong> the ArmyChemical Corps at the National Archives in Greenbelt, Maryland.The <strong>United</strong> <strong>States</strong> Armed Services Center for Unit Records Research (CURR), The<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Army, Springfield, Virginia was contacted with the assistance <strong>of</strong> theDeployment Health Support Directorate, Deputy Under Secretary <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defense</strong>(Installations and Environment), <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Defense</strong>, Washington, DC. CURRprovided numerous leads on important documents.The <strong>Defense</strong> Technical Information Center (DTCI), Fort Belvoir, Virginia, is the“premier provider <strong>of</strong> DoD technical information.” DTIC is the repository <strong>of</strong> thedocuments submitted by the military to its predecessor, the <strong>Defense</strong> DocumentationCenter (DDC). A DTIC search resulted in the identification and acquisition <strong>of</strong> numerousDDC documents.The Armed Forces Pest Management Board’s <strong>Defense</strong> Pest Management InformationAnalysis Center, and Literature Retrieval System, Forest Glen Section, Walter ReedArmy Medical Center, Washington, DC. The Literature Retrieval System is an onlinecollection <strong>of</strong> scientific papers comprising more than 102,000 documents in searchablePDF format for research purposes only. The Literature Retrieval System was an excellentsource <strong>of</strong> information.The Alvin L. Young Collection on Agent Orange, Specially Collections, The NationalAgricultural Library, Beltsville, Maryland, This is a collection <strong>of</strong> more than 7,000documents collected by Dr. Alvin L. Young from 1969 – 1987 on the issues associatedwith the use <strong>of</strong> <strong>herbicide</strong>s in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Many <strong>of</strong> the documents aretechnical reports <strong>of</strong> research conducted by the military on the use and disposal <strong>of</strong> <strong>tactical</strong><strong>herbicide</strong>s. Included are technical reports by Dr. Young on the fate <strong>of</strong> the <strong>tactical</strong><strong>herbicide</strong>s in the environment. Approximately 1,600 documents are retrieval in asearchable PDF format.The Office <strong>of</strong> Air Force History, Bolling Air Force Base, Washington DC, and the Office<strong>of</strong> History, Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Ohio wereadditional sources for information on <strong>tactical</strong> <strong>herbicide</strong>s, Operation RANCH HANDOperations Operation PACER IVY and Operation PACER HO.17
