eferral message to Choose and Book completely replaces the previous one, the newmessage must contain all the remaining elements of the current referral information (even ifparts of it have not changed) and so be a complete replacement for the previous one. A newmessage ID must be used.V6-R17V6-R18V6-R19Changes to a referral letter must result in an entire replacement letter beingsent to Choose and Book.Changing a referral letter must be an easy process, with the previous letterbeing presented to the user for editing. The referring system must maintain a clinical audit trail of each letter sent toChoose and Book.Choose and Book enables users to perform the role of Service Provider and during thatsession to onward refer a patient to another clinician. An example is a GPSI who may see apatient who has been referred to them by another GP and may then refer on that patient intosecondary care. The second referral created by the GPSI has a new UBRN. The onwardrefer process is initiated from within Choose and Book, not the users compliant referringsystem, and so there is no UBRN seamless transition and so no IN01/IN02 interaction toexchange UBRN’s with a compliant Referrer System. If the clinician wishes to use theircompliant Referrer System to compile and send a Referral Letter then they may do so byattaching the letter to the new UBRN as a file attachment within Choose and Book. When Choose and Book receives the Notify Patient Referral PRPA_IN030000UKnn, itvalidates the following information:• A valid UBRN exists in the Referral.id• The referral has not been tagged as frozen by the Service Provider because theService “freeze time” has been reached• If a Referral Letter already exists for the UBRN, then the Referral Letter waspreviously received by a Notify Patient Referral interaction and not built inChoose and Book.If the validation fails or for any reason the referral cannot be stored, Choose and Book willreturn an error in the Application Acknowledgement. Possible error texts are indicated inAppendix A8.Due to message size, compliant Referrer systems will likely implement the Notify PatientReferral as an asynchronous interaction, i.e. where the user is not waiting for the applicationacknowledgement from Choose and Book. If Choose and Book does not accept the NotifyPatient Referral interaction it sends a negative application acknowledgement to the referrersystem and it is important that this is flagged to the relevant user so that the error can beresolved. It is obviously a clinical safety risk if a negative application acknowledgement isreceived by the referrer system and is not acted upon by relevant staff in a timely manner.V6-R20If a negative application acknowledgement is received by the referringsystem, or no application acknowledgement is received, in response to a NotifyPatient Referral, this must be notified to the relevant clinical or managementusers in a timely and appropriate manner so that the error can be resolved.Choose and BookAtos Origin - Commercial In ConfidenceChoose and Book ComplianceVersion: 8 (final)Reference EBS-AN\BA\BA011 9 May 2007Page 47
