• The service provider system sends a PDS Retrieval Query Started -QUPA_IN040000UKnn message interaction to the PDS contain the NHS number ofthe patient whose details are required, <strong>and</strong> waits for a response;• If the PDS processes the message successfully, it will return the requested patientdetails in a PDS Retrieval Query Successful - QUPA_IN050000UKnn messageinteraction;• If the PDS is unable to find a match on the NHS number, or cannot process themessage a Query Act Failed QUQI_IN010000UKnn message interaction will bereturned. This must be logged in the error log.Patient registration or update can proceed with the details retrieved from PDS, with thefollowing points of note to be taken into consideration by the supplier:• The NHS Number/demographics from the PDS can be matched against existingpatients on the local database to determine if the patient is already registered locally<strong>and</strong> so whether casenotes exist. The search criteria <strong>and</strong> match criteria are theresponsibility of the supplier, but consideration should be given as to whether NHSNumber alone is sufficient, or whether surname, date of birth <strong>and</strong> gender could alsobe used;• Given the difficulties of matching patients, it is possible that human intervention maybe required to confirm a match. Where a match does or does not occur thenpossible functionality may be required to manually match records <strong>and</strong> performpatient ‘merges’;• If no match can be established a registration of a new patient is necessary using theinformation retrieved from the PDS.• It is possible that a PDS Query may not return any Patient details; either noresponse is received or the response does not contain the expected information.This may happen, for example, if the patient is stopnoted, the PDS is unavailable, orthe TMS or MHS is unavailable.• The service provider’s demographics for the patient could be more up to date thanthe PDS, particularly if the patient has not yet told their GP of a change of details;• If the registration or update of the patient fails then this must be written the error log,<strong>and</strong> it must be possible for the overall booking of the appointment to be completed.<strong>Choose</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Book</strong>Atos Origin - Commercial In Confidence<strong>Choose</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Compliance</strong>Version: 8 (final)Reference EBS-AN\BA\BA011 9 May 2007Page 65
