It has a start time and end time, and it has a unique reference, theUnique Slot Reference Number (USRN). The slot duration derived from the start and endtime is measured in whole minutes and must be greater than zero. The slot must beallocated a priority (the MiM states this is optional but it is mandatory) and may optionally beassociated to a clinician responsible for the slot. All these attributes are set by the serviceprovider system and are passed to Choose and Book on the Respond Available SlotsPRSC_IN090000UKnn interaction. The USRN is defined as a UUID within the HL7messages. The USRN is published to Choose and Book as the unique reference for the slotand Choose and Book will use the USRN to identify the required slot when a booking ismade. Internally, the Service Provider System must be able to map the USRN to a specificslot in a Clinic. It is recognised that some clinics may not operate on strict defined slot basis, but rather on atriage or walk-in basis. Examples of such Services are clinical assessment services, radiology services, and mental health services. Choose and Book may be used to bookappointments into such Services provided a scheme to publish slots can be established bythe Service Provider. For example, slots may be published that run from 9am to 5pm ormultiple slots every hour may be published to ensure that there is always capacity to meetdemand. The scheme devised is at the discretion of the Service Provider.Slots are published to Choose and Book with a priority; currently the nationally agreed set foruse within Choose and Book are: two week wait, urgent and routine. Priorities defined locallyin the Service Provider system (like “Very Urgent”) cannot be passed to Choose and Book.It is for the Service Provider organisation to determine their strategy for making slotsavailable to Choose and Book. For instance, they may choose to hold back slots for twoweek wait referrals, or release unused urgent slots as routine slots to ensure clinic capacityis utilised. It is the responsibility of the Service Provider system supplier to providefunctionality to support their Customers by providing flexible mechanism to publish slots.
