<strong>TDM</strong> <strong>Berhad</strong> (6265-P) 31Healthcare DivisionCurrently operating three medium sized private hospitals which serveas community hospitals offering secondary care – Kelana Jaya MedicalCentre (KJMC) in Selangor, Kuantan Medical Centre (KMC) in Pahangand Kuala Terengganu Specialist Hospital (KTS) in Terengganu – theHealthcare Division contributed 20% to the Group’s revenue and 11%to profi ts during the period under review.Despite the challenging economic climate, the healthcare divisionrecorded a positive revenue growth of 14% to RM65.92 million ascompared to the previous year, to generate a profi t of RM8.33 million,which was an increase of 36%.With a total of 138 beds, the Healthcare Division treated a total of11,600 inpatients and 105,327 outpatients in <strong>2009</strong>, which was a 7%and 14% over the previous year respectively; with occupancy rate of70%.Malaysia’s healthcare industry was relatively unscathed by thepandemic effects of the unhealthy global economy, growing by 8%in <strong>2009</strong>, which is an indication that more people are now consideringprivate healthcare as an option.Malaysians are also living longer with an average life expectancyof 73.29 years in <strong>2009</strong>, which has resulted in an increasing ageingpopulation within the general population of 28.31 million, which offerstremendous potential for the niche secondary care segment in which<strong>TDM</strong> <strong>Berhad</strong> focuses on.The country’s economic growth, development of new urban areas, anenlarged middle class and the inclusion of hospital insurance in salarypackages have resulted in signifi cant investments in the healthcareindustry.With the government actively encouraging corporate hospitalinvestment to complement the public hospital system, there has beenincreasing stiff competition within the private sector with many foreignplayers venturing into the market. The trend is expected to continuein 2010.
