13HOW TO CHOOSEA PULLERIt’s important when buying a puller to considerthree basic specifications:REACHReach is the distance from the base of the hub tothe flats of the jaws. This must be greater thanthe distance from the end of the shaft to behindthe gear or wheel to be pulled. Maximum Reachis always specified.SPREADSpread is the distance between the puller’s jawsand must be greater than the diameter of thewheel or gear being pulled. Minimum andmaximum spread is noted in each table.CAPACITYCapacity is the amount of force each puller iscapable of exerting safely without damagingeither the puller or the gear.
