The Centreserves individual instructors, departments' and other groups directlyaffecting teaqhingand learning-at <strong>McMaster</strong>. Our main goals are:1. To provide opportunities for faculty and graduate students to-buildteaching skills and, in particular, to develop skills in self-directedlearning, inquiry and other innovative teaching models.2~ To' support faculty in investigating and using new technologiesto enhance learning for our students. .3. To offer advice on policy and projects'that support good teaching(e.g.; award programs and the evaluation of teaching),4. To assist individual faculty members and groups of faculty inconducting educational research to understand how studentslearn and what makes for effectiv.e teaching within a universityenvironment.5~ To support and encourage innovation.6. To assistand support the testing and evaluation of new learningmodels that build upon the inquiry approach and other innovativeteaching models pioneered by <strong>McMaster</strong> <strong>University</strong>.,7. To share our knowledge, of best teaching practices in highereducation to improve the qU,ality of education locally, nationallyand internationally.8. To enable the circulation of teaching and learning insights.The Centre',sactivities include:IThe Inquiry Project: The Cll assists and supports the development,evaluation and dissemination of the <strong>McMaster</strong> InquiryProject as part of its larger Program for Active learning. Thecentral goal is,to incorporate the concept of student as activelearner throughout the entire undergraduate experience.learning Innovation Gr~nts, These grants will assist faculty toapply and evaluate a variety of innovative educational ~trategiesand will 'support applied research into teaching and,.learning inhigher' education.'• The Centre invites applications for projects aimed at the improvementof teaching and learning at <strong>McMaster</strong>. Groups ofindividual instructors, teaching assistants, students or depart- ,ments may apply. Applications for grants up to $1,000 may besubmitted at any time. Applications for grants over $1.,000 aresolicited annually, usually in January, with a deadline of mid-. February. Detailed criteria are available on request.• A Special Grant for New Faculty of $10,000 to refine coursesafter the first three years. ' .• Five Departmental Grants of $25,000/year will be available toassist major departmental initiatives that take place over SEWer~ye~&'learning Technologies~ Characteristics of technology offer a new .tool to promote learning, and to complement active and self-directedlearning. The Cll, will be able to put you in contact withpeople who have expertise in technology and its use in ~ducation.Activities for Teaching ·Assistants: The Centre plans and organizesT.A. Day, a campus-wide welcome and .orientation programfor teaching assistants. It also offers,a series of mini-c~ursesdesigned for graduate students who are about to apply for or takeup their first position as a faculty member or a non-academic ~professional. The Centre also offers a credit course in teaching tohelp graduate students become familiar with the literature on, university teaching and to develop some basic skills in the practicalaspects of teaching.'ACADEMIC FACIUTIES; .. ~TUDENT~ERVICES AND ORGANIZATIONS 309 .Workshops, Seminars and Conferences: A wide variety of eventsare offered, conducted by <strong>McMaster</strong> faculty, visiting resourCe peopleand Cll staff. Generally, the topics are ones requested byinstructors or departments and typically include subjects suchas teaching .Iarge classes, self-directed learning,. research onlearning and teaching methods, 'lecturing, small group discus-'sion, simulations and the use of technology in education.Peer Consultation: The <strong>University</strong> has a group of faculty memberswho are trained to help other instructors collect information onhow a course is' going. The process is'designed to give instructorsfeedback on a course, not to give advice on how to teach it. Theultimate goal is to improve the quality of student learning. All communicationsare confidential,. and every peer consultant has ~xperiencedthe process as a client as well as a consultant.Refining a Course: This model of course consultation takes ap- 'proximately 2,5 hours. The course instructor, the students inapar~icular course, and a third party come together early in theterm with the intention of modifying one particular course. Sincethe .instructor has final responsibility, he or she initiates the processand sets the boundaries for what can be modified.Library Resources: The Cll Library is a collection of over 6,000books, articles and journals an university teaching and' learning.It is an excellent way to find ideas for improving, and promoting'active learning.
