<strong>TERENA</strong> Compendium of National Research and Education Networks In Europe /Users/Clients2.3 Percentage of Total AccessCapacity Available forDifferent Categories of UsersGraph 2.3.1 gives the percentage of the total accesscapacity for each category. The graph shows threecategories: tertiary education and research, primaryand secondary schools, and all others. It seemslogical that NRENs that connect a large proportionor all of the secondary and primary schools intheir countries (e.g., BREN of Bulgaria, RESTENAof Luxembourg and and FCCN of Portugal) alsodevote a large part of the access capacity to schools.However, this is not always and not necessarilythe case: it is influenced, on the one hand, by thedifferences in access capacity between the differentcategories of institutions and, on the other hand,by the nature of access technology, which varieswithin and between these categories. Very often,schools are connected, nominally at 2Mb/s, but insuch a way that hundreds of them might share aconnection of 45 Mb/s in total (so-called ‘contended’bandwidth, versus ‘uncontended’ bandwidth formost of the larger institutions). As a result, it is notsurprising that the graph shows a wide diversitybetween the different NRENs.For the EU/EFTA countries that have answeredthe relevant survey questions, on average(weighted), more than 80% of the accesscapacity is used for the tertiary education sector.This is similar to last year.Graph 2.3.1 Percentage of Total Access Capacity Available for Different Categories of Users27
