TERENA Compendium of National Research and Education Networks In Europe /Network3A.5 Expected Change in Core Capacityin Two Years’ TimeThe following table gives the current core capacities, the expected increase intwo years’ time and the estimated core capacities for early 2009.Note that, typically, the core capacity goes up in leaps, sometimes involving achange from one type of technology to another. Note also that it is not alwayseasy to predict the evolution in core capacity. This is because this evolutiondepends on many factors, such as developments in technology, pricing and theavailability of sufficient funds for investment. The trend is clearly that, in most countries, the core capacity will evolve tomultiples of 10 Gb/s. It is interesting to note that many EU/EFTA countriesforesee further upgrades in the next two years. Many other countries havealso upgraded to Gigabit capacities.Table 3A.5.1 Expected Change in the Core Capacity in Two Years’ TimeCountry NREN 2008 2010EU/EFTA CountriesAustria ACOnet 10Gb/s Vienna Core,1Gb/s AustrianBackboneBelgium BELNET between 5 and 10Gb/smulti10Gb/s ViennaCore, 10Gb/s AustrianBackbonebetween 10 and 20Gb/sBulgaria BREN 100 Mb/s 2.5 - 10 Gb/sCyprus CYNET 1Gb/s EthernetNetwork1Gb/s EthernetNetworkCzech Republic CESNET 10 Gb/s 10-40 Gb/sDenmark UNI-C 2 Gb/s level 2 ringstructureEstonia EENet Gigabit Ethernet 10 Gb/sFinland Funet 2.5 Gb/s betweenmajor PoPsdwdm ring withmultiple 10G10G in most cases (IPservice); lightpathavailability to mostPoPsTable 3A.5.1 - continuedCountry NREN 2008 2010EU/EFTA CountriesFrance RENATER 2.5 Gb/s 10 Gb/sGermany DFN 10 similarGreece GRNET S.A. 2.5 Gb/s nx10Gb/sHungary NIIF/HUNGARNET 10 Gb/s 10 Gb/sIceland RHnet 1 Gb/s 10 Gb/sIreland HEAnet 10 Gb/s n x 10Gb/sItaly GARR 10 Gb/s 40 Gb/sLatvia SigmaNet 1290 Mbit 3500 MbitLithuania LITNET 1 Gb/sLuxembourg RESTENA 1000Mb/s 10Gb/sMalta UoM, IT Services 1Gb 2 Gb/sNetherlands SURFnet 20 Gb/s 40 Gb/sNorway UNINETT 2.5 Gb/s 10 Gb/sPoland PIONIER 20 Gb/s 40 Gb/sPortugal FCCN 10G 40GRomania RoEduNet 1 Gb/s 10 Gb/sSlovakia SANET 10 GE on 1/2 ofbackbone, 1 GE onthe restwhole backbone 10GEor n*10GESlovenia ARNES 1 Gb/s 1 Gb/sSpain RedIRIS 10Gb/s nx10Gb/sSweden SUNET 10 Gb/s per customer SameSwitzerland SWITCH 10 Gb/s 2*10 Gb/s in parallelUnited Kingdom JANET(UK) 10Gb/s 40Gb/sOther CountriesBelarus BASNET 100 Mb/s 1 Gb/sCroatia CARNet 1 Gb/s The bandwith will beupgraded in the MANsand the number ofPOPs will increase.40
