STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT OF THE CHILDREN’S SERVICES INDUSTRYHuon Valley Children’s <strong>Services</strong>http://www.huonvalley.tas.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=303Over time Huon Valley Children’s <strong>Services</strong> has taken responsibility for a number <strong>of</strong> standaloneservices, <strong>of</strong>ten those with viability issues, to enable <strong>the</strong>m to continue to meetcommunity needs. The service has also expanded its links to o<strong>the</strong>r family services in partthrough funding from <strong>the</strong> Commonwealth’s Child Care Links programme. The services weredeveloped by <strong>the</strong> Huon Valley Council.Milpara Early Learning Centre/Burnie Primary SchoolA child care centre was built by <strong>the</strong> State Government in 2005 on <strong>the</strong> Burnie Primary Schoolsite (part <strong>of</strong> a six service programme). As well as meeting an identified need for child care in<strong>the</strong> area and more effective use <strong>of</strong> school land, <strong>the</strong> aim was to move over time from a colocationsituation to more integrated service provision and collaborative practice.Prior to commencing <strong>the</strong> project, information was provided about <strong>the</strong> need for care in <strong>the</strong> areaand <strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> Burnie Primary School as <strong>the</strong> site. School and council staff worked toge<strong>the</strong>rwith <strong>the</strong> architect and builder (and <strong>the</strong> Education Department) to achieve <strong>the</strong> final building.During this time <strong>the</strong> relationship between <strong>the</strong> schools and <strong>the</strong> service provider was fur<strong>the</strong>renhanced (<strong>the</strong> Council already provided OSHC on <strong>the</strong> school site).66
