Lessons were held during sportssessions towards the end of the year bythe Headmaster, David Hosking.L-R: Wendy, Dan & Gary Miles; Robyn, Robert & Gordon Lulham; Top right: Robert, Joel & Andrea LagoThe Year 7 Graduation was a night forcelebration, recognition and farewelling.The event was organised by the Year 7teachers in acknowledgement of thecontribution made by the Year 7 studentsduring the primary stages of theireducation.It was a very special evening when boyswere asked to wear long trousers, shirtsand ties and the girls wore semi-formalattire. Parents sat with their children andenjoyed a full catered dinner in the Hall ofFame at the Somerset Sports Centre.Though the 2006 academic year is wellunderway, the superb achievements of theSenior Humanities students from the Classof 2005 deserve acknowledgement, asthey will certainly take some beating. Thehighlights were:Senior Modern History student, SamiraShahabuddin, going where no otherstudent has gone before with a VHA 9Level of Achievement, to reach suchstratospheric academic heights in a coursewhere so much emphasis is placed onIt was a time of recognition and manyindividual students were acknowledgedfor their specific achievements. It wasalso a time to reminisce and manyhumorous anecdotes were ‘let out of thebag’, to the amusement of parents.Various groups of students performedskits, musical presentations and otherentertainment.It is a tradition of the <strong>College</strong> that thePride or Erin is performed by Year 7students at their Graduation and it hasbecome customary for the Headmaster toHumanities Students of 2005in a class of their ownsuch skills as researching and essaywriting, is indeed exceptional. Samirawas one of the 80% of Ancient andModern History students to exit at VHA orHA Level.As impressive as this percentage is, the 58Senior Geographers actually exceeded itwith 19 VHA students, or 33% of thecohort, exiting with a VHA. These figuresand percentages are easily the highest andthe best ever achieved at <strong>Ormiston</strong><strong>College</strong> and according to RonOn this occasion, David and Jill Hoskingled the students out on to the Courts ofthe Sports Centre, and with parents seatedat courtside, they led the students andteachers in the traditional dance. As is thecustom, this was followed by the studentsthen requesting partnership with a parent,when the Pride of Erin was performed forthe second time.The evening included the presentation ofthe Head of Junior School Awards byGlenda Seawright. Each year, onestudent from each of the four classesreceives a certificate - this is notacknowledgement of academicachievement but a special award inrecognition of potential.The event was enjoyed by all and was fullof emotion and pride. We wish our youngGraduates every success in the SeniorSchool.Bartholomew, the Head of theDepartment, “It means that for the last 2years 80% of our 200+ Senior Humanitiesstudents have exited at VHA or HA Levelwith grades that are hugely above theState Average, and comparable to anyschool in Queensland. In fact, show mebetter"!We have to say 'Well Done' to the man atthe helm, Ron Bartholomew, and to theHumanities staff, in particular, IanBurgess, Anne-Marie Gerlach and BarbaraWortley. What a great team!
