FEF NewsThe inconstancy of sunlight makes itan even more uneconomical proposition—andsubstantially so. But withfusion, where we produce an artificialsun on Earth, we can collect the energyin three dimensions. The concentrationof energy is thereforehigher in the extreme. We won't needthousands of square kilometers, butcan work with very small spaces. Wehave a highly concentrated energysource. The concentration of energyin fusion is much, much higher, millionsof times greater than in chemicalcombustion.Question: What impression do youhave of the work of the Fusion EnergyForum from your recent tour?First of all, I have been very impressedwith its members. They are allvery energetic and intelligent youngpeople with a genuine interest in thecommon good. They are definitelycontributing a great deal to the formulationof a positive energy policyin the interests of the Federal Republic. This they are doing through theireducation of the public on the truthabout nuclear energy, fusion in particular.Question: You have spoken beforethousands of listeners here, especiallyin the universities. What do you thinkof university students in the FederalRepublic? The universities constitute a widefield, where through education manyadherents can be won for an energypolicy beneficial to all. I don't believethat all students here are environmentalist"greenies." That's just nottrue. Many students are committed tonuclear energy, and many are undecidedbecause they hear all mannerof propaganda, including bald-facedlies. Your campaign to spread thetruth and to educate the students onfission and fusion is a contribution oftremendous importance. Given thepositive results we see here now, Ibelieve your campaign can succeed ifyou carry on with the approach youhave used so far.FEF Dossier AvailableEnvironmentalists Handle Nuclear PRIn the course of investigating slandersof the FEF circulated to U.S. utilityexecutives, the foundation discoveredthe equivalent of the fox beinghired by the chickens to help designtheir coops; namely, a top environmentalistfirm, Ogilvy & Mather International, now handles the publicrelations for the U.S. nuclear industry. After further research, the FEF compiledand issued a dossier on Ogilvy& Mather, the advertising representativefor leading one-worldist and environmentalistcircles, and their buyoutof the public relations firm ofUnderwood & Jordan. For many yearsUnderwood & Jordan has been thekey public relations voice of Americanelectric utilities and nuclearpower companies.Ogilvy & Mather's May 1981 acquisition, one of the least publicized ofthe recent wave of "flight capital"takeovers of American companies byforeign and foreign-linked firms, isprobably the most dangerous to theU.S. national security, the dossier says.Among the clients represented byOgilvy & Mather International are theWorld Wildlife Fund, Royal DutchShell, three British government institutions, and the Principality of Monaco—clientsthe FEF has documentedto be leading opponents of industrialprogress and the widespread implementationof nuclear energy."American utilities and energycompanies are now being advised bythe same firm that is the publicitybrains behind the world environmentalistmovement," the dossier states. In fact, David Ogilvy, the formerBritish espionage expert who foundedthe advertising firm, is one of theexecutive council members of theWorld Wildlife Fund and personallyplans its publicity campaigns againsthigh-technology energy production.Ogilvy & Mather International alsorepresents the Bronfman family-controlledJoseph E. Seagram & Sons ofCanada, placing the advertising firmnear the center of the recent wave offoreign takeover attempts of U.S. industry."Underwood & Jordan did not objectto the takeover," the dossier continues,"which put Ogilvy & MatherInternational in public relations controlof the Edison Electric Institute, the association of investor-ownedutilities; of many individual utilities;of several nuclear firms; and of Americansfor Energy Independence, among others."Many of the utilities affected havenot even been informed of the takeover. However, electric power companiesnationally have been receivingadvice from New York and Washington-based'analysts' to forget nuclearpower as an option, on the groundsthat energy consumption is droppingand nuclear power will never againbe a justifiable capital investment. This directly defies current U.S. administrationand congressional policy."The dossier noted that this advicehas been associated with slanders ofthe FEF, its 200,000-circulation Fusionmagazine, and its contributing authors. In March, the Edison ElectricInstitute mailed out to all its membersa package of materials slandering theFEF, which had already been judgedlibelous by the High Court of France(see Fusion, Aug. 1981, p. 58). In June,an Underwood & Jordan vice presidentadvised an author against publishingin Fusion an article critical ofthe science budget cuts. This targetingof the FEF is now understood to becoordinated by Ogilvy & Mather Internationaland its environmentalistclients.Five hundred copies of the dossierwere mailed out to utility executives, scientists and engineers at the nationallaboratories, government energyofficials, and trade union leaders.Copies are available from the FEF.Please enclose a self-addressed,stamped envelope.58 FUSION October-November 1981 FEF News
