Houston Spaceweek Conf.Refutes 'Limits to Growth'The world renowned astrophysicistDr. Krafft Ehricke elaborated his theoryof the "extraterrestrial impera Tfive" as the answer to limits to growthideology before an audience of 150 atthe FEF's conference celebrating naftional Spaceweek in Houston July 8.Ehricke, a pioneer in rocket andmanned space flight development formore than 30 years, began his keynoteaddress with a point by point refutationof the arguments of the C/obal2000 Report, prepared by the Carteradministration and still policy of theHaig State Department."Every single advance since photosynthesisin the negentropic developmentof this biosphere has, togetherwith its benefits, created newproblems to be solved," Ehricke asserted."The antitechnology movementsuse the appearance of suchproblems to assert that there must beno more advance. But we must notbe preoccupied with the problems, but with the solutions. If we allowourselves to be stopped by the problems,we will become the weak linkin the overall development of thebiosphere. I don't want man to go••NnMHanHHHDHnBiHmnBaandown in infamy as the weak link!"Ehricke located the necessity ofman's conquest of space in the contextof the principle of the continuingdevelopment of the universe and thebiosphere of the Earth. He then outlinedthe three stages of the explorationand development of outer spaceopened up by the success of theSpace Shuttle: space industrialization;space urbanization; and what hetermed divergence, the effects on humanevolution of living in space.Putting Man into SpaceFuture astronaut Dr. Claude Nicollier,a Swiss astrophysicist from theEuropean Space Agency who is trainingfor the Space Lab mission, joinedEhricke on the program, along withJim Hudson, a supervisor for RockwellIndustries, and Carol White, editor ofThe Young Scientist. The conferencewas greeted by a spokesman forHouston Mayor James McConn.Krafft Ehricke and Carol White at the FEF's Spaceweek conference in Houston.Nicollier gave a presentation on thework of the European Space Agency, which is preparing for a Shuttle flightin collaboration with NASA in 1983.This mission will carry the EuropeanbuiltSpace Lab into space in the payloadbay of the Shuttle for importantin-orbit experiments.Hudson introduced a NASA film onthe first flight of the Space ShuttleColumbia with a discussion of thepromise of the future flights of thereusable Shuttle, whose thrust, he remindedthe audience, is 100 timesgreater than the first rocket that putan American into orbit in 1962.The focus of Carol White's speechwas the necessity of immediately reversingthe cuts in NASA's budget, which threaten important programs;and she reported on the FEF's proposalfor a NASA budget of $14 billion, more than double the presentamount, but the equivalent spent onspace by the United States at the peakof the NASA program in 1966.The conference, which was attendedby area FEF members, localofficials, and a representative of Texascongressman Bill Archer's office, wascovered in the Houston Chronicle, the Houston Post, and the ABC-TVaffiliate.The December issue of Fusion willfeature an article by Ehricke on theextraterrestrial imperative, which willexplore the physiological, aesthetic, and immunological changes inhumanevolutionary characteristics that willresult from living in extraterrestrialenvironments.Columbia ReadiedContinued from page 50will attempt to provide a scientificmap for finding schools of fish, locatingby color the concentrations ofgreen chlorophyll, characteristic ofalgae. The distribution of algae willthen be mapped with temperature inorder to locate schools of fish. This mapping will also provide dataon ocean pollution that will bechecked with data from ships andlow-flying aircraft. The experimentwill concentrate on the region nearthe Canary Islands, off the coast ofPeru, and along the east coast of theUnited States off Cape Cod and Georgia.—MarshaFreemanFEF News October-November 1981FUSION 59
