SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS OF CANADAbut eventually the decision was given against the Battalion.On July 1st the usual Dominion Day celebrations wereheld. This year there were better opportunities than everbefore, and full advantage had been taken <strong>of</strong> them. Thenatural amphitheatre at Tincques, together with the grandstand built <strong>of</strong> bridging material by the Engineers, anddecorated as everything was, afforded at the same timean excellent and picturesque view <strong>of</strong> the stadium for themany thousands <strong>of</strong> troops who attended. The long periodin reserve had afforded ample opportunities for thoroughtraining and satisfactory eliminations, with the result thatall the events were well contested and formed a magnificent spectacle splendidly organized and staged. It was amemorable day in the history <strong>of</strong> the Canadian Corps. TheBattalion was well represented among the spectators although it did not show up so well as usual among thecompetitors.On July 2nd the Battalion paraded with the Brigade atFerfay and was inspected by the Corps Commander. Hewas accompanied by the Canadian Premier, Sir RobertBorden and also by Sir George Perley.On July 6th about 400 <strong>of</strong> the Battalion again went toTincques to be present at a Highland gathering organizedby the 3rd) Canadian Infantry Brigade, which was participated in by almost all <strong>of</strong> the Scottish units in France. Atthis gathering the Battalion succeeded in <strong>ca</strong>rrying <strong>of</strong>f theLovat Cup, presented by Lord Lovat to the Canadian Battalion securing the greater number <strong>of</strong> points. The pointssecured by this Battalion were as follows:Pipe Band, 3rd in Competition, 1st in Canadian Corps. ... 5 pointsTug <strong>of</strong> War, 1st In Competition 5Pole Vault, 1st in Competition 5Highland Reel, 1st in Competition 5Broad Jump, 2nd in Competition, 1st in Canadian Corps. . 5Sword Dance, 3rd in Competition, 2nd in Canadian Corps. . 3This total was almost equal to the total <strong>of</strong> all the points10428
