EARLY EVENTScouver, the Coronation was fittingly celebrated. The weather,which had been threatening in the morning, could not havebeen better when the ceremonies began in the afternoon,and a crowd <strong>of</strong> about 30,000 people covered every foot <strong>of</strong>space in the park, and filled the grand stand to overflowing,the display <strong>of</strong> troops was something previously unknownin Vancouver, and the new Highland regiment especiallydrew forth favourable comments. Lined up in front <strong>of</strong> thestand from which the speeches were made, the <strong>Highlanders</strong>,the Sixth Regiment, the Boy Scouts, the High School Cadets and the Veterans made an impressive sight.On the following July 29th, the annual games in connection with the Caledonian and St. Andrew s Societies wereheld at Brockton Point grounds, when the presence <strong>of</strong> many<strong>of</strong> the privates and most <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> the <strong>72nd</strong> brightened the oc<strong>ca</strong>sion. The tug <strong>of</strong> war between the differentcompanies<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Highlanders</strong>proved one <strong>of</strong> the most interesting events <strong>of</strong> the day. It finally settled down to &amp;gt;apullbetween D and G Companies, and after several minutes <strong>of</strong>gruelling work, D Company <strong>ca</strong>rried <strong>of</strong>f the prize.The first inspection <strong>of</strong> the regiment took place on August1st <strong>of</strong> the same year, the inspecting <strong>of</strong>ficer being Col. Wadmore,D. 0. C., M. D. No. 11. The regiment paraded on theCambie Street grounds, and the men made a fine appearance. The D. 0. C. put the regiment through a somewhatsevere test in the various movements, most <strong>of</strong> which wereexcellently done. The marching <strong>of</strong> the regiment was especially remarked. Speaking <strong>of</strong> the inspection afterwards, Col.Wadmore said that he was highly pleased with the regimentand complimented Col. Leckie and the other <strong>of</strong>ficers on thehigh state <strong>of</strong> efficiency to which, in a comparatively shorttime, the regiment had been brought.In the spring <strong>of</strong> 1912, the regiment went into training onVancouver Island, the work done consisting chiefly <strong>of</strong> tacti<strong>ca</strong>l exercises which received their culmination in the shambattle at Colwood.
