A BEATEN FOE.to make a stand, trusting largely no doubt to the broad,deep line <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ca</strong>nal and its adjacent waterways to furnish a much-needed support to his rapidly weakeningtroops.In the three days between the 23rd and 26th <strong>of</strong> Octoberthe 78th and the 85th Battalions had <strong>ca</strong>rried the line <strong>of</strong> the12th Brigade through the maze <strong>of</strong> villages which border thebefore-mentioned <strong>ca</strong>nal immediately to the west <strong>of</strong> Valenciennes, to the actual <strong>ca</strong>nal bank itself. On the night<strong>of</strong> the 25th the <strong>72nd</strong> moved into close support <strong>of</strong> the 78thBattalion in the village <strong>of</strong> La Senitinelle, and two dayslater relieved that Battalion in the front line, which consisted <strong>of</strong> posts in the houses along the <strong>ca</strong>nal bank overlooking the historic lace-making centre <strong>of</strong> France, Valenciennes.159
