SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS OF CANADAintroduced the subject in vigorous terms, and it was unanimously resolved by the meeting that the time had arrivedfor the creation <strong>of</strong> a Highland regiment in Vancouver. Conversation took place as to the cost <strong>of</strong> uniforms, for whichmoney would have to be raised, since the Government contribution would only amount to $10 or $12 per man. Thesuggestion was also thrown out that the regiment mightbe <strong>ca</strong>lled the Strathcona <strong>Highlanders</strong>, an idea that wasafterwards dropped as Lord Strathcona had already givenhis name to another regiment. Capt. J. S. Tait was madesecretary.The topic was discussed in Scottish circles in the city fromall points <strong>of</strong> view, and general public approbation wasevinced, but some months elapsed before another meeting<strong>of</strong> the delegates was held. On January 17th, 1910, theyagain met, the personnel <strong>of</strong> the meeting including, besidesthose already mentioned, Mr. H. 0. Bell-Irving and Mr. J.McGlashan. Mr. Morrison reported that appli<strong>ca</strong>tion for permission to form a regiment had been sent to the Minister <strong>of</strong>Militia.It further transpired that it had been decided to applyfor the Number Seventy-Second, that <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Seaforth</strong>s inScotland; that number being va<strong>ca</strong>nt on the Canadian Militia List. The question <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers for the regiment <strong>ca</strong>me up,and as the Chairman announced that he was leaving for atour in New Zealand and Australia, Mr. David Robertson,vice-president <strong>of</strong> the St. Andrew s and Caledonian Societies,was appointed in his place.At the next meeting, February 9th <strong>of</strong> the same year, Mr.Bell-Irving brought forward the name <strong>of</strong> Major R. G. Edwards Leckie as an <strong>of</strong>ficer for the regiment, and also that<strong>of</strong> Lieut. G. H. Kirkpatrick. The question <strong>of</strong> quarters wasalso <strong>ca</strong>nvassed, and a committee was instructed to get towork and furnish Mr. Bell-Irving with a list <strong>of</strong> other <strong>of</strong>ficers.On July 12th,1910, Mr. Bell-Irving reported that he had2
