It was the success <strong>of</strong> this attack which was to givethe cue for the fighting to blaze up along the <strong>ca</strong>nal, forwithout this southern key positionto Valenciennes in ourpossession, any operation against the town from the wesitwould be impracti<strong>ca</strong>ble.
